Job summary

GovFirst is seeking a safety-focused Bridge-Tunnel Operations Crew Member to support onsite operations at HRBT and MMMBT in Hampton, VA. Responsibilities include traffic control, vehicle inspections, incident response, and customer assistance in a high-volume transportation environment.

The role requires strong situational awareness, the ability to multitask, and effective communication with motorists and crews. A high school diploma or GED is required, with bilingual Spanish considered a plus.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Knowledge of traffic control operations and roadway safety.
• Strong verbal and written English communication skills.
• Spanish bilingual skills are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Staff inspection station locations to stop and inspect vehicles for over-height conditions, hazardous materials, security threats, and regulatory violations.
• Accurately document vehicle inspections, violations, and incidents, and communicate findings to the Operations Crew Lead and Control Room.
• Direct and control traffic throughout the facility using approved traffic control techniques.
• Maintain a visible security presence and remain alert to suspicious activities, security concerns, and safety hazards.
• Investigate and report unusual or suspicious activity per procedures.
• Assist State and Local Police, Fire, EMS, and maintenance personnel during routine operations and emergencies.
• Respond to roadway incidents including crashes, disabled vehicles, debris, and detours.
• Provide roadside assistance to motorists (tire changes, jump starts, fuel, debris removal).
• Serve on Emergency Response Team and support roadway safety operations.
• Operate patrol and support vehicles and perform pre/post-trip inspections.
• Deploy and restock Incident Response Trailers and use hand tools for maintenance.
• Perform housekeeping to keep areas safe and clean.
• Conduct inspections of facilities and equipment.
• Process over-height vehicle violations and coordinate escorts.
• Monitor roadway conditions and communicate with motorists and Control Room.
• Use two-way radios and documentation systems.
• Complete inspection reports and logs; relay information to supervisors.
• Perform light to moderate manual labor up to 50 lbs.
• Take on additional duties as assigned.
