Job summary

VDOT is hiring for a bridge inspection role focused on visual and tactile assessments of bridges and highway structures. You will operate inspection equipment, collect data, and draft reports to support maintenance decisions. The position emphasizes safety, accuracy, and adherence to standards.

The role requires interpreting structural drawings, using CAD and MS Office, and maintaining inventory data. A related engineering degree is preferred, with FHWA safety course desirable.

Qualifications

• Ability to diagnose causes of damage and deterioration to bridges and structures.
• Ability to follow safety practices and procedures and use required equipment.
• Ability to prepare and/or draft structural drawings and sketches.
• Ability to read and interpret bridge and structure plans and specifications.
• Knowledge of and skill in the application of engineering math.

Responsibilities

• Assist with visual and tactile inspections of bridges and highway structures to discover deterioration, damage, and defects.
• Operate specialized inspection equipment and vehicles.
• Collect structural data and dimensions of components; prepare inspection reports and related documentation.
• Assist with creation of new inventory records and update existing data.
• Follow safety regulations and use protective equipment; apply detour and traffic control procedures as needed.
