Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation seeks skilled workers to repair, maintain and replace bridges and structures to meet safety standards. You will perform carpentry, welding, and concrete finishing, remove and install structural components, and support emergency operations.

Environmental protection and safety compliance are integral to daily tasks. Responsibilities include operating highway equipment, following safety rules, and collaborating with crew members on maintenance projects.

Qualifications

• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and follow written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
• Experience with light/medium equipment and hand/power tools.

Responsibilities

• Perform carpentry, welding and concrete finishing on bridges and structures.
• Remove and install structural components to erect, replace or demolish structures.
• Place temporary bridges and respond to emergencies; operate equipment for snow/ice removal.
• Operate light and medium‑duty highway equipment for maintenance tasks.
• Apply in‑stream and environmental protection measures during work.
• Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures and work zones; maintain safe work sites.
• Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on tools and equipment.
