Job summary

The Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled Bridge/Construction Worker to repair, maintain, and replace bridges and structures in accordance with safety standards and VDOT procedures. You will perform carpentry, welding, concrete finishing, and operate light to medium equipment on job sites, while ensuring proper safety practices and coordination with crews.

This is a hands-on role with heavy physical requirements. Pre-employment checks and training may be required.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
  • Ability to work at heights, in heavy traffic, over and in water, and under other adverse conditions.
  • Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials, and safety practices.
  • Safety shoes required.
  • Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
  • Skill in operating and using light and medium-duty equipment. Skill in using hand and power tools.

Responsibilities

  • Perform carpentry, welding, and concrete finishing. Remove and install structural components to erect, replace or demolish structures.
  • Place temporary bridges and remove damaged structures; operate equipment for snow and ice removal; clear roadways and manage traffic control.
  • Apply in-stream and environmental protection measures during maintenance and construction activities.
  • Operate light and medium-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques; wear PPE; follow OSHA/VOSHA safety rules; use MUTCD guidance.
  • Participate as a working crew member; perform manual labor to assist in construction, repair and maintenance of timber, steel and concrete bridge elements.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment; transport personnel, equipment and materials; complete pre-trip inspections.

Job description

Repair, maintain, and replace bridges and structures in accordance with established safety standards, VDOT specifications and procedures, and equipment operation standards.

How You Will Contribute
  • Construction Operations: Perform a combination of skilled tasks including carpentry, welding, and concrete finishing. Remove and install structural components to erect, replace or demolish structures.
  • Emergency Operations: Place temporary bridges and remove damaged structures. Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other emergency operations. Clear roadways of snow, ice, and debris and provide traffic control.
  • Environmental Protection: Apply appropriate in-stream and environmental protection measures during all structural maintenance and construction activities.
  • Equipment Operation: Operate light and medium-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Job Safety: Determine and demonstrate proper work site protection techniques. Identify workplace safety hazards and make suggestions. Wear personal protective equipment and maintain knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws, and procedures (OSHA, VOSHA, etc.). Use equipment safely and apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc. Follow VDOT safety regulations.
  • Manual Labor: Participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects and accomplish objectives. Perform manual labor and other tasks as needed to assist the team in construction, repair and maintenance of timber, steel and concrete bridge elements and other structures.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment and tools. Transport personnel, equipment and materials to and from work sites. Ensure all equipment is properly and safely maintained. Complete pre-trip inspections for any vehicle or equipment operated.

Additional Considerations
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in construction or related field desired.
  • Experience fabricating or welding steel components.
  • Experience in bridge maintenance or construction.
  • Experience in carpentry, building forms and false works, and concrete placement and finishing.
  • Experience with light to medium-duty equipment and hand and power tools.
  • Flagger.
  • Valid Certified Crane Operator with appropriate endorsements.
  • Valid Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements.
