Bridge Engineer

ATCS is seeking a qualified Bridge Engineer to join our Structural Engineering practice. This role can be based out of our Virginia locations (Herndon, Richmond, Newport News, Virginia Beach, Blacksburg) with a flexible, hybrid work environment.

This role involves performing analysis, design, and documentation of transportation structures, focusing on bridges, culverts, retaining walls, foundations, sign structures, and ITS structures. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Structural Engineering to expand this discipline across the company. The position requires technical leadership, coordination of design activities, project submissions, and quality assurance/control to ensure technical and client satisfaction.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Perform and review design calculations, prepare technical specifications, cost estimates, and construction documents, and deliver projects successfully
  • Assess and evaluate existing structures
  • Develop solutions within client budgets and schedules
  • Issue reports, schedules, and cost estimates
  • Assist with responses to Statements of Interest (SOIs), Requests for Proposals (RFPs), and other pursuits
  • Develop project budgets and scopes of work
  • Conduct peer reviews and prepare expert reports
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Valid Professional Engineering (PE) license in Virginia; PE licenses in PA, MD, NC, or SC are highly desirable
  • Knowledge of DOT standards, procedures, and specifications
  • 5 to 15 years of experience in bridge inspection and design
  • Experience with rehabilitation of existing bridges and highway structures
Desired Qualifications:
  • Bridge Safety Inspection certification
  • Experience with design and analysis using various materials such as steel, precast and cast-in-place concrete, prestressed and post-tensioned concrete, and timber
Additional Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of VDOT or PennDOT design software
  • Familiarity with finite element and 2D/3D modeling programs
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong problem-solving skills and decision-making ability
  • Proficiency with Microstation and/or Open Bridge Designer

Our employees are our most valuable asset. We offer a competitive salary range of $79,500 to $132,000 annually, commensurate with experience, along with an annual bonus target of 2%.
