Job summary

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is seeking an experienced Bridge and Structural Design Engineer to support transportation projects via bridge design, preservation, load rating, plan development, and technical support for infrastructure. Positions are located in East Baton Rouge parish and report to the Engineer 6.

Career progression may fill Engineer 3, 4, or 5, with Special Entrance Rate (SER) compensation and options for advancement within the Engineering job

Qualifications

• Possession of a current Louisiana professional engineer license (or able to obtain).
• Licenses in other states may apply, with Louisiana license required before appointment.
• Engineering licensure verified by the hiring agency.

Responsibilities

• Assist with bridge and structural design for transportation projects.
• Review or prepare plans, calculations, specs, estimates, and details.
• Perform or assist with bridge load ratings and evaluations.
• Support bridge rehabilitation, preservation, or new capacity projects.

• Review project documents for accuracy and compliance with standards.
• Contribute to development of design guidance, standards, and procedures.

About This Job

DOTD is seeking an experienced Bridge and Structural Design Engineer to support transportation projects and programs through bridge and structural design, bridge preservation, load rating, plan development, and technical support for transportation infrastructure projects. This position supports the development, delivery, maintenance, or improvement of transportation infrastructure by applying engineering principles, conducting technical analysis, coordinating projects, and conducting compliance-related reviews.

No prior licensed engineering experience is required — training is provided, with opportunities for career progression and advancement through the Engineering job series.

Positions are located in East Baton Rouge parish and report to the Engineer 6.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice professional engineering.

Note: Applications will be accepted from persons licensed to practice professional engineering in states other than Louisiana. Job Duties

Depending on level and assignment, Engineer 3 – Engineer 5 may:

• Assists with bridge and structural design activities for transportation infrastructure projects.
• Reviews or prepares plans, calculations, specifications, estimates, and structural details.
• Performs or assists with bridge load ratings, structural evaluations, or bridge preservation activities.
• Provides technical support related to bridge rehabilitation, replacement, preservation, or new capacity projects.
• Coordinates with project managers, consultants, districts, construction staff, and other internal or external partners.
• Reviews bridge-related project documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards.
• Supports development or maintenance of design guidance, standards, procedures, or technical documents.
• Assists with emergency response or technical reviews involving bridge or structural concerns.

Position-Specific Details

Career Progression: This position is part of a Career Progression Group and may be filled as Engineer 3, 4, or 5 based on qualifications and agency needs.

Compensation

These positions qualify for a Special Entrance Rate (SER).

Engineer 3 – [SER] $3,083.20

Engineer 4 – [SER] $3,529.60

Engineer 5 – [SER] $3,776.80

Additional compensation may be considered impart with extraordinary qualifications in accordance with State Civil Service Rules and DOTD policy.

Appointment Type

This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); Job Appointment (temporary appointment in a classified position for a limit of four years); or by detail to special duty.
