Job summary

Breakthrough Miami, an AmeriCorps program, seeks Academic Success Coaches to mentor and support Scholars across 5th–12th grade. You will engage in 1:1 advising, group sessions, and workshop facilitation at Breakthrough sites in Miami/Ft.

Lauderdale, aiding students on their eight-year path to high school graduation and college readiness. Training is provided; the role is part-time with a focus on data tracking, mentoring, and program delivery.

Qualifications

  • Education background suitable for mentoring and tutoring.
  • Ability to track progress and support students academically.
  • Willingness to participate in training and civic reflection.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a role model to Breakthrough Miami Scholars.
  • Track student progress through grades, test scores, attendance, and other relevant data.
  • Provide direct academic support services to Scholars under the direction of Breakthrough staff at designated Breakthrough Miami sites.
  • Conduct 1:1 academic and career advising; and deliver group advising sessions and academic support.
  • Plan and lead advisory class in Breakthrough Miami School Year Saturdays.
  • Lead academic and career development workshops.
  • Mentor Scholars on the skills and strategies needed for success in school.
  • Work closely with the assigned Breakthrough Miami site director on the assigned Scholar roster.
  • Aid in the planning and implementation of Breakthrough’s School Year Program (SYP).
  • Participate actively in all training, professional development, civic reflection, and service activities.
  • Reporting requirements include weekly timesheets and monthly data reporting.

Job description

Breakthrough Miami provides an academic and social enrichment program that uses a student-teaching-students model to ensure students who are traditionally marginalized due to systemic inequities, have access to rigorous learning environments, near-peer mentoring, wrap around advising, supportive networks, and resources to thrive in and outside the classroom, graduate from high school on time, and attend college. The program serves 1,700 students in 5th through 12th grade. Academic Success Coaches provide essential support to students on their 8-year path as Breakthrough Scholars. Working directly with Scholars, Academic Success Coaches provide mentoring, academic support, and coaching. Additionally, Coaches support program planning and implementation, and other activities to contribute to the success of Breakthrough Scholars. Academic Success Coaches receive extensive training in a variety of areas to prepare for a rewarding and successful placement with Breakthrough.
