Job summary

Job description

We are looking for a Break/Bulk Tech to help keep product moving at our facilities. In this role you will perform a variety of heavy‑handed, hands‑on duties as the operation of bulk and break‑bulk loading and unloading takes place.

Responsibilities
  • Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre‑shift meetings.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations (ISO where applicable) and wear the appropriate PPE.
  • Execute deckhand tasks, such as securing barges, reading drafts, opening/closing lids, and tying off barges.
  • Operate a skid loader on a barge during the final unloading stage.
  • Set up and operate conveyor system(s) whenever necessary, ensuring the correct product is directed to the correct storage area.
  • Clean up a barge after unloading by sweeping and/or shoveling.
  • Load railcars and trucks to specifications when applicable.
  • Complete documentation promptly, accurately, and legibly.
  • Operate a variety of heavy equipment and perform preventive maintenance (PM) when required.
  • Assist in general housekeeping of the entire work area.
  • Take on additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience: None required.
  • Preferred: 1 year of experience working in an industrial environment with a dependable work record.
  • Basic mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
  • Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact with all levels of people within and outside the organization.
  • Ability to complete documentation requirements.
  • Ability to follow direction and use logical thought processes to interpret oral and written instructions and troubleshoot problems.
  • Ability to work well both independently and within a team environment.
  • Ability to use appropriate tools for assigned tasks.
  • Ability to remain focused on exceptional customer service, both internally and externally.
Physical Demands & Requirements
  • Lift/push/pull up to 45 lbs. occasionally.
  • Climb, crawl, stoop, kneel and balance; work on barge surface(s) and around barge rigging with ability to work around deep water.
  • Walk safely on top of railcars, open gates, and operate vibrators when applicable.
  • Understand and communicate verbally, in person and over two‑way radio.
  • Work outside in extreme weather conditions; climb ladders and perform work at significant heights.
  • Grasp and reach frequently; work in confined spaces.
  • Work in an environment with high dust levels around grain and other bulk products.
  • Meet requirements of PFT and fit testing, when applicable.
  • Meet requirement to use all applicable PPE, when applicable.
  • Work extended hours, weekend, holidays and/or alternate shifts as needed.
  • Use peripheral vision and depth perception for tasks.
Environmental Conditions

The work environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions, often requiring the use of personal protective equipment.

Travel

Approximately 5%–20% travel may be required for off‑site training and/or work at alternate locations.

Pay Range

$16.50 – $25.00 per hour; actual pay may vary based on location, knowledge, skills, and experience.
