Job description

Job Overview

Break/Bulk Tech – responsible for bagging, loading, and unloading of bulk and break‑bulk products at CGB facilities, ensuring product movement, safety compliance, and accurate documentation. The role involves operating deckhand tasks, heavy equipment, and conveyor systems, with a focus on safety, efficiency, and teamwork.

Responsibilities
  • Fully participate in the company Safety Program and attend daily pre‑shift meetings.
  • Perform all duties in compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations (ISO where applicable); wear appropriate PPE.
  • Execute deckhand responsibilities such as securing barges, reading drafts, opening and closing lids, tying off barges, etc.
  • Operate a skid loader on the barge during final unloading stages.
  • Set up and operate conveyor systems where applicable.
  • Ensure the correct product is directed to the correct storage area.
  • Clean up the barge after unloading by sweeping and/or shoveling.
  • Load railcars and trucks to specifications.
  • Complete documentation accurately, timely, and legibly.
  • Operate various heavy equipment and perform preventive maintenance, where applicable.
  • Assist in general housekeeping of the work area.
Education

High school diploma or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience

Required – None. Preferred – 1 year’s experience working in an industrial environment with a dependable work record.

  • Basic mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide).

Physical Demands & Requirements
  • Lift, push, or pull up to 45 lbs. occasionally.
  • Climb, crawl, stoop, kneel, and balance.
  • Safely walk and work on barge surfaces and rigging with ability to work around deep water.
  • Walk safely on top of railcars, open gates, and operate vibrators where applicable.
  • Understand and communicate verbally, in person, and over two‑way radio.
  • Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • Climb ladders and work at significant heights.
  • Grasp and reach frequently.
  • Work in confined spaces.
  • Operate in environments with high dust levels around grain and other bulk products.
  • Meet requirements of PFT and fit testing, when applicable.
  • Meet and utilize all applicable PPE, when applicable.
  • Work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and/or alternate shifts as needed.
  • Use peripheral vision and depth perception for tasks.
Environmental Conditions

The employee works both inside and outside in heat, cold, wet, humid, and dry conditions, often using personal protective equipment.

Travel

5%‑20% travel may be required for some facilities, including off‑site training and work at alternate locations.

Compensation

Expected base pay range: $16.50 – $25.00 per hour, subject to variation based on location and experience.
