General Manager - Plumbing Service

Position Summary

A well-established plumbing contractor is seeking an experienced General Manager to lead its Service Department. This position oversees service plumbers and technicians responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems across residential and commercial properties. The General Manager will work closely with service and installation technicians, dispatch personnel, vendors, customers, and other department leaders to ensure efficient operations, high-quality workmanship, strong customer satisfaction, and departmental profitability. This is a hands-on leadership opportunity for an experienced plumbing professional who understands both the technical and business sides of running a successful service operation.

Key Responsibilities

• Direct the daily operations of the Plumbing Service Department.
• Schedule, manage, and provide technical support to service technicians based on workload, skill level, and customer requirements.
• Recruit, interview, hire, train, develop, and evaluate technicians.
• Oversee plumbing repair, installation, start-up, troubleshooting, and service activities.
• Review completed work to ensure quality, safety, and technical standards are consistently met.
• Establish technician performance expectations and improvement goals.
• Develop and maintain ongoing technical and safety training programs.
• Conduct team meetings, one-on-one meetings, performance discussions, and departmental safety meetings.
• Partner closely with dispatch to optimize technician scheduling, utilization, and response times.
• Maintain visibility into active projects, estimated completion times, labor hours, materials, and parts requirements.
• Communicate with vendors and manufacturers regarding warranties, product issues, recalls, equipment failures, and technical concerns.
• Develop and manage departmental budgets, goals, KPIs, and profitability objectives.
• Review work orders, invoices, time reports, and related documentation for accuracy and timely billing.
• Monitor accounts receivable and support healthy departmental cash flow.
• Ensure required parts and materials are ordered in time to meet service and project deadlines.
• Ensure technicians consistently follow company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
• Oversee assigned service vehicles, including maintenance, condition, appropriate usage, and parts/material inventory.
• Keep current on plumbing products, equipment, service techniques, troubleshooting procedures, and industry developments.
• Coordinate technician training and maintain appropriate training records.
• Generate sales opportunities and help grow maintenance and service agreement business.
• Prepare estimates and bids for service contracts and project work.
• Manage larger plumbing installation, start-up, and commissioning projects.
• Coordinate technicians, contractors, and other resources through project completion and equipment turnover.
• Partner with other department leaders to achieve broader company goals.
• Perform additional responsibilities as needed to maintain efficient service operations.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

• Minimum of 5 years of plumbing management experience.
• Strong, hands-on knowledge of the plumbing trade and plumbing systems.
• Demonstrated experience leading and developing service technicians.
• Strong understanding of plumbing service, repair, installation, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and control-related documentation.
• Knowledge of applicable plumbing codes and the ability to identify practical technical solutions.
• Experience managing department budgets, costs, productivity, and profitability.
• Strong customer service and sales capabilities.
• Experience developing customer relationships and identifying service or maintenance opportunities.
• Strong leadership, coaching, and team-building abilities.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong conflict-resolution and problem-solving capabilities.
• Highly organized and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and general business software.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, or other non-standard hours when business needs require.

• $120,000-$140,000 annual base salary, depending on experience
