Job summary

Texas Department Of Criminal Justice seeks a General Counsel III - Deputy General Counsel to provide strategic legal guidance to agency leadership. The role requires a law degree (JD or LL.B.), a minimum of seven years as a licensed attorney or in a legal clerkship with one year as legal counsel for a government agency, and at least three years of supervisory experience.

Experience in administrative, contract, criminal, or labor/employment law is preferred, as is prior governmental counsel work.

Qualifications

• Graduation from a law school accredited by CHEA or USDE with an LL.B. or J.D.
• Seven years full-time experience as a licensed attorney or legal clerkship with one year as legal counsel for a governmental agency
• Three years full-time supervisory experience
• Experience in administrative, contract, criminal, or labor/employment law preferred
• Experience as a legal counsel in governmental setting preferred
• Must maintain a current active license to practice law in Texas during employment

• Provide legal advice and support to the agency's leadership and operations
• Oversee legal matters, compliance, and policy development
• Supervise and mentor legal staff and ensure timely, accurate counsel
• Coordinate with state Bar of Texas and external entities as needed

• Three years full-time, wage-earning experience in the supervision of employees.
• Experience as administrative, contract, criminal, or labor/employment law preferred.
• Experience as a legal counsel in governmental preferred.
