Qualifications

• GL-9: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, duties include searches, restraining violators, and investigative prep.
• GS-11: One year of specialized experience with authority to enforce laws, lead investigations, and train others.
• No education substitutions for these grade levels.
• Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen.
• Formal Training: Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM, about six months; Spanish proficiency required.

Responsibilities

• Detect and question individuals suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspect documents.
• Patrol borders using vehicles, horses, boats, and off-road assets to deter illegal entry and smuggling.
• Lead investigations into fraud or contraband and coordinate with other law enforcement.
• Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in use of firearms while ensuring safety and protocol.
