Job summary

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is seeking an experienced Border Patrol Agent (BPA) at GL‑9 / GS‑11. This full‑time career role offers competitive base pay, locality pay, overtime eligibility, and retention incentives up to $40,000, plus recruitment incentives up to $20,000.

Selected candidates may be assigned to duty locations nationwide, with possible relocation. After Academy training in Artesia, NM, agents defend borders using a range of vehicles and tools, and must meet citizenship,

Qualifications

• Citizenship: U.S. citizen required.
• Residency: primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
• Age: referred for selection before 40th birthday (with veterans' preference exceptions).
• Formal training: BPA Academy in Artesia, NM after hire; Spanish proficiency is required.

Responsibilities

• Detect and question individuals suspected of immigration and customs violations; inspect documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.
• Prevent and apprehend aliens and smugglers at or near borders using surveillance and covert positioning.
• Interpret tracks and physical evidence of illegal entry or contraband; perform checks and patrol duties.
• Patrol the international boundary and coastal waterways using vehicles, horses, vessels, watercraft, off‑road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles.
• Lead investigations and coordinate with law enforcement officials; apply firearms proficiency and investigative reporting.
