Border Patrol Agent (BPA) GL-5/7 grade levels.
Note: Duty assignments may include the Southwest Border and other prioritized locations. Relocation may be required. Assignments are based on operational needs.
Recruitment Incentives: Earn up to $30,000. Newly appointed BPAs receive a $20,000 incentive, paid in installments after training and service commitments. Additional incentives are available for prioritized locations.
U.S. Border Patrol offers a career with law enforcement professionals dedicated to protecting America. This is a full-time, entry-level law enforcement officer position with competitive salary and federal benefits.
Starting salary varies by grade and location, with potential for up to 25% locality pay. Progression through grades is possible after successful completion of 52 weeks at each level. Benefits include health, dental, insurance, leave, and retirement plans.
Protect borders, deter illegal activity, and support law enforcement efforts. Typical duties include questioning suspects, surveillance, interpreting physical evidence, and patrolling borders using various vehicles and equipment.
To qualify for GL-5: One year of general work experience or a bachelor's degree or a combination of both. For GL-7: One year of specialized law enforcement experience or a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement, or a combination of experience and education. Additional requirements include U.S. citizenship, residency, age restrictions, and veteran preferences.
Post-hire, training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, NM, lasts approximately six months. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred and provided during training.
