Base Pay Range

$49,739.00/year - $89,518.00/year

Summary
  • Recruitment Incentive: Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents will be offered a $20,000 incentive, paid as $10,000 upon academy completion and the remainder after a three-year service agreement. Accepting a prioritized location grants an additional $10,000, totaling $30,000.
Duties

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) seeks individuals to help protect American interests and secure our nation. As a Border Patrol Agent, you will:

  • Detect and question persons suspected of violating laws, inspect documents, and determine citizenship or violations.
  • Prevent and apprehend undocumented noncitizens and smugglers, using surveillance and physical evidence tracking.
  • Perform various patrols and checks, including farm, building, traffic, city, and transportation checks.
  • Patrol international borders and waterways using varied government assets.

Salary & Promotions

Initial selections are at GL-5 or GL-7 grade levels, with potential promotion to higher grades. Pay is determined after all pre-employment steps, based on the 2025 OPM Salary Tables, excluding overtime and incentives.

Locations & Incentives

Applicants will choose preferred duty locations. If no vacancies exist at your chosen location, you may be offered an alternative within the U.S. or its territories. Additional incentives apply for prioritized locations.

Additional Requirements
  • Polygraph exam, U.S. Border Patrol Academy training, age restrictions, firearm proficiency, background checks, language skills, and medical and physical fitness tests.
Qualifications

Qualifications vary by grade level, requiring experience, education, or a combination thereof. Specific requirements include legal eligibility, law enforcement or related experience, and educational credentials. Additional considerations include veteran status and prior law enforcement experience for higher grades.
