Job Overview
The Books and Records Oversight team within Markets Operations aims to strengthen the books and records discipline and control framework within Markets Operations. The function was recently created to drive remediation efforts and adoption of strong accounting practices as part of firm-wide policies and programs. The role requires a solid accounting and financial background coupled with an understanding of operational processes, and will lead Markets Operations’ engagement with the Finance department and firm-wide forums on accounting related matters. Other objectives include developing robust quality control around balance sheet substantiation for accounts owned by Markets Operations and working with the leadership team to develop strong books, records, and accounting knowledge across Markets Operations via training and standards.
Responsibilities
- This role will be critical in driving the strategic delivery of key initiatives and continuous improvements across the Books and Records function, translating organizational goals into actionable plans, embedding best practices, and ensuring long‑term operational excellence.
- Work with line Operations teams to guarantee all metrics and controls are in place and maintain effective monitoring.
- Collaborate with Finance colleagues to ensure balance sheet substantiation is complete and controls are effective.
- Foster a strong understanding of accounting practices within the wider Markets Ops team, linking cash movement to book recording.
- Partner closely with Business partners and Transformation teams on new initiatives to embed robust financial controls.
- Oversee and coordinate all account owner activity across Markets Operations, including maintaining the Operations chart of accounts and defining roles and responsibilities for controls and reconciliations.
- Identify and address exceptions and breaks, ensuring timely escalation, root‑cause resolution, and theme analysis.
- Ensure well‑defined processes for reserve calculations and reduce aged exceptions to lower reserves.
- Review account ownership to standardize proofing processes and centralize where suitable.
- Partner with other functions—Finance and Operations Risk & Control—to keep Markets Operations compliant with policies and standards.
- Collaborate with Balance Sheet Control and risk reporting to support accurate and timely exceptions reporting.
- Work with Front Office to ensure upstream data and processes are robust, preventing downstream issues.
- Promote consistency and common standards across the Centralized Operations team.
- Drive progress on improvement areas: build mechanisms to accrue and distribute interest across desks, implement best practices for reconciliations, promote development of account and reconciliation SMEs, and strengthen issue‑management processes.
- Lead and oversee Markets Operations’ involvement in firm‑wide accounting programs (e.g., Strategic Ledger) and represent Markets Operations at governance forums such as the Enterprise Design Authority.
Experience
- 15+ years relevant experience.
- Industry expertise in financial accounting and operational aspects of books and records management and account management.
- Experience with finance professional background and technology product development, including UAT and collaboration with Finance and Operational teams.
- Articulates clearly how risk technology supports the unit’s business and identifies gaps between current technology and business requirements.
- Consistently reads situations accurately, taking appropriate actions to gain senior colleague/client commitment.
- Ability to measure and assess the impact of stress shocks, including fat‑tailed risks.
- Well‑versed in reviewing the dimensions of franchise risk.
- Strong leadership skills—operates as a leader and serves as a point of escalation for key issues or time‑sensitive decisions.
- Acts decisively in high‑risk scenarios, assessing situations based on data, experience, intuition, and judgment.
- Responds to challenges with creative solutions and adapts to changing business needs.
- Demonstrates sound judgment on issues that are quantitative and qualitative.
- Manages issues related to operational risk capital alongside Finance, Risk, and business partners.
- Acts as a role model for people management, coaching, and mentorship.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; active listening.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or University degree; Master’s degree preferred.
