Description: Leadman - Provides leadership, instruction, and guidance to other craft workers in work crew, assisting the Foreman, while working in the capacity of a journeyman.
Summary
Assembles, analyzes for defects, and repairs boilers, tanks, vats, and pressure vessels, boiler auxiliaries, and ancillaries according to blueprints and specifications, using power tools and hand tools.
Responsibilities
- Locates and marks reference points for columns or plates on foundation, using tools and knowledge of geometry.
- Attaches rigging or signals crane operator to lift components to specified positions.
- Aligns structures or plate sections to assemble boiler frames, tanks, or vats using plumb bobs, levels, wedges, dogs, or turnbuckles.
- Prepares edges of sections or structural parts by hammering, flame-cutting, filing, or grinding to facilitate fitting.
- Bolts or arc-welds structures and sections together.
- Positions drums and headers into supports, then bolts or welds supports to frames.
- Aligns water tubes, connects, and expands ends to drums and headers using tube expander.
- Bolts or welds casing sections, uptakes, stacks, baffles, and other fabricated parts to frames.
- Performs minor maintenance or cleaning activities with tools and equipment.
- Installs manholes, handholds, valves, gauges, and feed water connections in drums for water tube boilers.
- Signals crane operator during lifting operations.
- Assists in testing assembled vessels for leaks by pumping water or gas under pressure and observing instruments.
- Repairs boilers or tanks in the field by unbolting, flame cutting, straightening plates, installing tubes, and welding or fitting new sections.
- May fasten and caulk sections of vessels using pneumatic fasteners and caulking hammers.
- May line fireboxes with refractory bricks and blocks.
- May fabricate parts such as stacks, uptakes, and chutes to adapt boilers to installation sites.
- Uses flame cutting and torch techniques.
- Responsible for observing safety and project rules.
- Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent preferred, with relevant experience. Knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures within the field. Works under supervision, following instructions and guidelines. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

- Standing 60%, walking 20%, sitting 20%. Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs. Pushing and pulling 70 ft-lb.
- Climbing and balancing: Occasionally. Reaching and handling: Constantly. Fingering: Frequently.
