Job summary

NC Department of Administration is seeking applicants for a Boiler Operator in the Facility Management division. The role maintains steam output, operates fuel oil and gas boilers, and monitors related equipment to ensure safe and efficient plant operation in state facilities.

Preferred candidates have prior boiler operation experience; valid NC Driver's License is required; position may require standing for long periods and exposure to extreme conditions.

Qualifications

  • One year of progressive experience in the performance of tasks associated with mechanical maintenance or boiler operation.
  • Familiarity with building life and safety codes.
  • Willingness to work with boiler room equipment and safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining and repairing boilers and boiler room auxiliary equipment such as pumps, steam and water valves, air compressors, steam traps and blowers.
  • Monitoring load demands and starts or shuts down respective boilers to maintain the required steam output needed throughout the State Government Complex.
  • Providing constant monitoring of all operation readings/controls and ensuring that all burner nozzles are kept clean during operations using Number 2 fuel oil.
  • Ensuring that all controls, feed water, draft, etc., are maintained for optimum plant operation.
  • Reacting to changes in load demands as required, including during emergencies.
  • Operating, adjusting and identifying problems with support equipment.
  • Monitoring chemical feed system for water treatment and making necessary test and adjustments to ensure correct chemical levels.

About Us

The NC Department of Administration is the business manager for North Carolina state government. The department oversees Government Operations such as building construction, purchasing and contracting for goods and services, maintaining facilities, managing state vehicles, acquiring and disposing of real property, and operating auxiliary services such as courier mail delivery and the sale of state and federal surplus property. Additionally, the department manages many of the state's advocacy programs that provide assistance and services to diverse segments of the state's population that have been traditionally underserved.

Description of Work

The North Carolina Department of Administration is seeking applicants for a Boiler Operator for our Facility Management division. The primary mission of Facility Management is to provide a safe and healthful work environment for employees and the public in a cost effective and energy efficient manner. This mission is accomplished by performing routine, preventive, and emergency maintenance to state facilities owned by and allocated to the Department of Administration. The person in this position will maintain a continuous vigil while taking all steps necessary to maintain a steam output that will meet total demand. This position requires a thorough working knowledge of fuel oil and gas boilers. Duties include maintenance and repair of boilers and boiler room auxiliary equipment such as pumps, steam and water valves, air compressors, steam traps, and blowers. This position monitors load demands and starts or shuts down respective boilers to maintain the required steam output needed throughout the State Government Complex. Individual must be able to react to changes in load demands as required, including during emergencies. The employee in this role must be able to operate, adjust, and identify problems with support equipment. Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

MAX SALARY FOR THIS POSITION: $46,286 Recruitment Range: $35,596-$46,286 NOTE: "See Resume" is not acceptable to show work history The position requires standing for long periods of time and performing manual labor. The position may require exposure to extreme environmental conditions. The position may require the use of personal protective equipment. The individual hired for this position must be familiar with building, life and safety codes. Employee is required to wear a uniform, picture ID badge, use safety equipment and follow safety regulations which are provided by the state.

Preferred applicant will have previous experience as a Boiler Operator.

Other Requirements: Valid NC Driver's License. Out of State Applicants must have valid Driver's License and acquire NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
