Job description

Responsibilities:

  1. Efficiently operate low pressure steam and hot water generating equipment to maintain proper pressure and amounts of steam, ensuring compliance with state and local operating codes and requirements.
  2. Monitor gauges on boilers and auxiliary equipment to ensure proper, safe, and efficient operation regarding pressure, water levels, temperature, and flow; make necessary adjustments, repairs, and maintenance.
  3. Execute switches to different fuels, such as natural gas to oil and vice versa, at the request of the gas company to avoid penalty payments for unauthorized use of natural gas.
  4. Conduct water tests to determine the amount of blow down and the proper amounts of chemicals to maintain proper chemistry.
  5. Maintain the Heating Plant in a neat, clean, and orderly manner.
  6. Keep daily logs and records of steam usage, fuel consumption, water consumption, and equipment readings as required by state and local regulations.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, read and interpret sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of mechanical systems and necessary safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of state heating and ventilating codes, steam-fitting code, OSHA, and computerized HVAC control systems.
  • Familiarity with procedures and practices for building HVAC systems, installation methods, operation procedures, and control strategies.
  • Skilled in the use and care of mechanical tools and equipment.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Must be able to physically access boiler inspection areas.
  • Basic understanding of email, scheduling, and computer monitoring.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

Minnesota Boiler License-Class 2C, 1C, or Chief C required. Steam Engineer's License of the class required by law.
