Job description

Civil Service Title: Assistant Civil Engineer

Minimum Qualifications
  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or
  2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Master's degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.
Job Responsibilities
  1. Serve as Assistant Team Leader in the Bridge Inspection & Management unit of the Bureau of Maintenance, Inspection and Operations.
  2. Perform routine, special, and emergency inspections using various equipment and tools, including inspecting elevated structures over roadways, railroads, water, and tunnels.
  3. Prepare bridge condition sketches and inspection reports according to standards.
  4. Identify and prioritize potential hazards and prepare structural and safety flags with plans, drawings, and specifications.
  5. Assist the Director of Bridge Inspection with related work in the office.
  6. May be required to work evenings, nights, and weekends.
  7. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Preferred Skills
  • Ability to perform inspections in all weather conditions, including nights and weekends.
  • A valid Motor Vehicle Driver's License in New York State may be required for certain assignments, and must be maintained during employment.
