Job description

Civil Engineer III

Serves as a Team Leader/Quality Control/Assurance Engineer in the Bridge Inspection and Management unit of the Bureau of Maintenance, Inspection, and Operations. Performs scheduled and emergency bridge and tunnel inspections, including structures over roadways, railroads, and water, often in confined spaces using equipment such as bucket trucks, man-lifts, ladders, and snoopers. Conducts walk-through inspections on bridge reconstruction projects, prepares and reviews comprehensive inspection reports, and documents bridge conditions with sketches. Identifies potential hazards, prepares safety and structural flags with plans and specifications, and responds to structural emergencies with remedial recommendations. Supervises field staff and ensures compliance with safety and governmental standards. May work off-hours as required and reports on team activities, assisting the Deputy Director of Bridge Inspections with related duties.

Preferred Skills
  • At least one year of experience in bridge inspection, maintenance, or construction.
  • New York State PE License and NHI bridge inspection certification.
  • Familiarity with the new AASHTO rating system for bridges and tunnels.
  • Ability to operate an Inspection Van.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Four (4) years of full-time civil engineering experience.
  • Valid New York State Professional Engineer's License, maintained throughout employment.

A master's degree in civil engineering from an accredited institution may substitute for one year of experience. To qualify for higher assignment levels, candidates need at least one year of recent experience as a project leader on complex projects requiring specialized expertise.
