Job summary

New York City Department of Transportation seeks an Assistant Mechanical Engineer to manage engineering projects and perform fieldwork across major bridge facilities in Brooklyn and Manhattan. You will conduct inspections, oversee emergency responses, and assist engineers with reporting and office tasks.

The role requires a strong background in AutoCAD and MS Office, with the ability to operate city vehicles and hold a NY state driver’s license in good standing. Residency not required.

Qualifications

  • Requires baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or mechatronics with 1 year of experience; or
  • baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering technology with 3 years of experience; or
  • baccalaureate degree and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering or mechatronics.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering project management and field work under supervision of senior engineers.
  • Conduct flag repair work, field visits, inspections, and emergency responses.
  • Prepare reports and assist in office tasks as directed by engineers.
  • Operate and monitor preventive maintenance on 23 movable bridges and 4 fixed East River bridges.
  • Execute critical preventive maintenance on bridges carried out by contractors and in-house crews.

Job description

Title & Eligibility

Civil Service Title – Assistant Mechanical Engineer. To be considered, candidate must be serving permanently in the title or be reachable on the open‑competitive list.

Office and Mission

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges, manages the full life cycle of over 800 bridges and tunnels and over 600 retaining walls, ensuring public safety and mobility. Team members work on major project designs, oversee construction and maintenance, perform engineering reviews, and conduct quality assurance on some of the City’s most iconic and complex projects.

Responsibilities
  • Perform engineering project management and trades field work under the supervision of senior engineers.
  • Conduct flag repair work, field visits, inspections, and emergency responses.
  • Prepare reports and assist in office tasks as directed by engineers.
  • Operate and conduct preventive maintenance on 23 movable bridges and 4 fixed East River bridges, monitoring and analyzing electromechanical systems around the clock to ensure safe operation for pedestrians, vehicular and marine traffic.
  • Execute critical preventive maintenance on various East River and movable bridges carried out by contractors and in‑house crews.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or mechatronics with one year of full‑time satisfactory mechanical engineering experience; or
  • Baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering technology with three years of full‑time satisfactory experience; or
  • Baccalaureate degree and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering or mechatronics.
Preferred Skills
  • Ability to perform inspections in all weather conditions, including nights and weekends.
  • Strong background in AutoCAD and the MS Office suite.
  • Ability to drive a city‑owned vehicle and possess an unrestricted New York state driver’s license, which must be maintained during employment.

8:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday‑Friday
