Boat Building Teacher

Overview

Community Boat Building’s (communityboatbuilding.org) mission is to bring real world experience and academic skills together to stimulate an excitement for learning among low-income students in Boston Public Schools through boat building and coastal experiences.

Our programs help underserved students connect in-classroom learning with a tangible project, making learning real and relevant. The skills they develop have a transformative impact that is transferable to school, future employment, and throughout life. Taking students out of their classroom and engaging them in hands‑on learning makes their world bigger and brings learning to life.

Community Boat Building is a fiscally sponsored organization of Third Sector New England, Inc. (TSNE) (tsne.org).

Responsibilities

The teacher position is a full‑time position for the 2026-27 school year that reports to CBB’s Project Director. The position focuses on three areas:

• Teaching academic concepts to elementary and middle school students through boat building;
• Developing new curriculum ideas;
• Working with volunteers and other staff to manage our shop and programs.

Job Functions:

• Serve as the relationship manager for a CBB partner school or organization;
• Teach the CBB curriculum to students who may range in age from 5th grade through 8th grade. CBB seeks to engage partner schools for year‑long programs, but there may be shorter‑term engagements as well. Boat building typically occurs in teams of 6 students and is designed to complement and reinforce grade‑level math instruction. Additional benefits of the program for students are engineering concepts and social‑emotional development. In addition to boat building, this teacher will also be responsible for helping to supervise rowing lessons, facilitating program evaluation;
• Aid in occasional promotional events like the New England Boat Show or fundraising events;
• In concert with rest of CBB staff, help ensure the shop space is clean and safe, tools are maintained, items are organized, and layout is conducive to learning and working;
• Bring new ideas to the table – in concert with Project Director, explore curriculum ideas, educational partners and new initiatives;
• Assist with volunteer management when working in the CBB shop;
• Monitor resource deployment between shop and school in terms of tools, materials, etc;
• Foster an innovative and supportive learning environment for all CBB students and staff.

Qualifications

We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

• Strong background in education, preferably working with 10-14 year olds. Experiential education experience and teaching credentials preferred but not required.
• General handiness and comfort in a workshop environment. It is not necessary that the applicant be an expert boat builder but comfort with tools and their uses strongly desired.
• Working knowledge of social‑emotional Learning concepts and their application in an active setting.
• CBB is a dynamic environment with a small staff. Ability to adjust focus to highest‑priority tasks is highly valued.
• Strong interpersonal relationship and communication skills. This teacher will be responsible for maintaining relationships with school administration, teachers, students and communicating plans and progress back to CBB’s Project Director.

Compensation and Benefits

Location: Work will be primarily performed at 21 Liberty Street, Boston, MA. Work is not eligible for remote work

Compensation: The starting salary for this position is $55,000- $60,000 and is commensurate with experience.
