Job summary

Blue Sky Fund in Richmond, VA seeks several bus drivers for its Explorers program, partnering with local schools to provide field trips focused on science, nature, teamwork, and outdoor experiences.

Responsibilities include safely transporting students, preparing and maintaining buses, and communicating with school staff and the Program Coordinator. CDL-P endorsement and air brake certification are required, with a schedule roughly Sept through Apr, Tue–Fri mornings to early afternoons.

  • Remain within 15 minutes of site during the program and communicate with the Program Coordinator.
  • Complete and stay current on driver training, certifications, and testing for safety-sensitive personnel.
  • Represent Blue Sky Fund professionally, serving as a positive role model for students.

Job description

Blue Sky Fund is a non-profit based in Richmond, VA. Our mission is to provide transformational experiences for Richmond area youth through outdoor education through two core program areas - academic and adventure. We are currently seeking several bus drivers for our Explorers Program. For a more detailed description of our core programs, please visit our website www.blueskyfund.org .

Explorers is an experiential education program that partners with 3rd - 5th grade classrooms in the Richmond Public School (RPS) and Henrico Public School (HCPS) system. Each partner school participates in science-based field trips in the Richmond area, focused on team-building, resilience skills, nature exploration, and positive experiences in the outdoors.

Key Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Safely drive one of the 3 Blue Sky buses - transporting 3rd-5th grade students from their schools to field experience sites and then returning them to school in the afternoons, while waiting on site.
  • Prep buses before field trips, maintain cleanliness post-trip, and report on the functioning of the Blue Sky Fund buses.
  • Check-in with schools upon arrival, load students and lunches.
  • Respond to and provide schedule and transportation updates as needed to the Program Coordinator.
  • Remain within 15 minutes of site during the program and maintain communication with the Program Coordinator.
  • Complete and stay current on relevant driver training, certifications, and testing for safety-sensitive personnel, as assigned by the Transportation Coordinator.
  • Represent Blue Sky Fund in a professional manner at all times, specifically acting as a positive role model for the students with whom we interact.

Job Requirements & Schedule:

  • Reliable transportation to Blue Sky Fund office.
  • Availability between September and April for assigned trips (trip schedule to be determined by mid-August). Time frame is generally 8 AM - 2:00 PM Tuesday through Friday. Some longer trips may extend stop time up until 3:00pm. Driver could be assigned to 1-4 trips/program week. There are some known program breaks around school holidays and for school-based programs in mid to late winter.
  • Employment is contingent on training for and successful attainment of Class B CDL-P (passenger endorsement) certification [approximately 120 hours], including air brake certification.
