Job summary

University Hospital’s Transfusion Service seeks a Blood Bank Technologist to prepare blood components, process patient specimens and manage transfusion-related duties. The role includes crossmatching, antibody screening, and handling inquiries on specimens and product availability.

The position emphasizes quality control, data entry, and routine laboratory tasks, with second-shift coverage and background check requirements. MT/MLS certification is expected within the first year.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in medical technology with MT/MLS certification (ASCP) or equivalent
• MT/MLS certification must be obtained within one year of hire
• Continuing education requirements for contact hours and health surveillance

Responsibilities

• Prepare blood components for transfusion, including receiving products from outside sources and allocating blood products for transfusions.
• Process patient specimens: enter test results, ABO/RH typing, crossmatching, antibody screening and identification.
• Receive telephone inquiries regarding specimens, test results, and product availability.
• Issue blood and blood products for transfusion and maintain patient files.
• Distribute supplies within the department and support general laboratory duties (filing, data entry).
• Participate in quality control and quality assurance activities.
