Job summary

Battelle is seeking a Blast Research Engineer for a full-time, on-site role at Tyndall Air Force Base near Panama City, FL. This position supports RDT&E efforts in airfield protection and blast mitigation for the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center.

Responsibilities include designing experiments, leading technical projects, and analyzing blast effects across full-scale and reduced-scale tests. U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain security clearance are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Structural, Civil, or similar).
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in research and development programs.
• U.S. Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Design experimentation procedures for evaluation of test systems, including instrumentation setup and data collection from field testing.
• Develop test plans, experimentation protocols, and technology assessment studies, and lead technical projects from inception through completion.
• Apply engineering research and analysis to understand explosive blast effects and blast mitigation at various scales including modeling and testing.
• Perform RDT&E of moderate complexity by compiling technical specifications and analyzing data to develop solutions.
• Analyze and interpret data; prepare technical reports and deliver presentations to clients.

Job Summary

We are currently seeking a Blast Research Engineer. This position is a full-time opportunity located on-site at Tyndall Air Force Base, near Panama City, FL. This position is contingent upon contract award and supports Battelle's National Security Business Unit in delivering Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) efforts in Airfield Protection, Installation Resiliency, and Blast (APIRB) in support of the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center. Active areas of research include but are not limited to: Blast and Ballistic Protection Systems Evaluation; Mitigation of Internal Blast Effects; Protective Concepts and Systems Against Forced Entry; Protective Systems for Infrastructure and Asset Survivability Against Cased Munitions; and Blast and Ballistic Protection for Guided Munitions.

Responsibilities

• Apply engineering research and analysis expertise to understand explosive blast effects and blast mitigation at full scale, reduced scale, and through modeling and testing
• Perform RDT&E of moderate complexity by compiling technical specifications, analyzing technical data, determining appropriate analysis methods, identifying problems, and developing and implementing solutions
• Analyze and interpret collected data; prepare technical reports and deliver both formal and informal presentations to clients

Key Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Structural, Civil, or similar discipline)
• Minimum of 5 years of experience related to research and development programs
• Strong structural engineering background
• Proactive, self-starting work style with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
• Positive attitude and eagerness to take on technical challenges
• Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
• Candidate must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with explosive blast effects and full-scale and reduced-scale modeling and testing
• Familiarity with high-speed cameras, instrumentation, and data analysis techniques
• Background in or understanding of blast mitigation strategies and protective system design

Compensation Data

Battelle is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role is $65,000 – $85,000 per year, in addition to our comprehensive benefits package. A candidate's salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to education, relevant work experience, skills, and certifications. Salary ranges may vary based on geographic location and market conditions.
