Job summary

Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL is seeking a Lab Technician to perform complex specimen processing and testing in a high‑volume laboratory. You will verify specimen identification, prepare containers with reagents, process and ship specimens, and ensure proper storage according to SOPs.

You will contribute to quality control, manage supplies, assist with equipment maintenance, and collaborate with outside facilities and IT systems daily.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and 1+ year of processing experience; associate degree preferred.
• Significant lab experience if no degree.
• Able to read specimen labels and follow SOPs; strong organizational skills.
• Willing to work flexible hours; LEAN and 5S understanding within 18 months.

Responsibilities

• Performs complex specimen processing and testing in a specialized laboratory area per SOPs and safety procedures.
• Manage specimen receipt, identification verification, processing, shipping and storage; handle large volumes for multiple protocols.
• Prepare lab specimens and containers with reagents for specific studies; ensure positive patient identification.
• Support quality control programs, maintain supplies, assist with equipment maintenance, and develop processing instructions.
• Work with outside facilities and various computer information systems daily; assist Kits and Shipping Teams.

Responsibilities

Performs complex specimen processing and testing in a specialized laboratory area using standard operating procedures and proper safety procedures. Responsibilities include specimen receipt, identification verification, processing, shipping and storage; processing large volumes of specimens for multiple protocols; accurately preparing lab specimens and containers with reagents for specific studies; processing research specimens safely and ensuring positive patient identification; prioritizing workload according to protocol needs; maintaining an efficient, well‑organized laboratory; managing supplies, assisting with equipment maintenance, maintaining quality control programs, and assisting with development of processing instructions; using good judgment and independent problem resolution for all duties; ensuring proper paperwork and shipping for all protocols; ensuring accurate storage for all specimen types; supporting maintenance of protocols and updates; working with outside facilities and with various computer information systems daily. The role supports our Kits and Shipping Teams.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and minimum one year of processing experience; associate’s degree preferred.
• In the absence of a degree, significant working experience in a laboratory setting is considered.
• Highly organized, efficient, able to work independently and with a team; demonstrates critical‑thinking and analytical problem‑solving skills.
• Clear written and oral communication; able to accurately read specimen labels and follow standard operating procedures.
• Capable of general troubleshooting and problem solving regarding laboratory procedures and equipment operation.
• Works flexible hours to meet workload demands; accommodates schedule changes, off‑shifts, holidays, and weekend assignments; meticulous attention to detail.
• Annual (state) certification for bioterrorism and shipping/handling and completion of Mayo Clinic’s Human Subject Training within 30 days of hire.
• Within 18 months of hire, must possess a basic understanding of LEAN and 5S processes.

Schedule Details

Monday‑Friday, 8‑hour rotations between 7 am‑6 pm. On‑call after‑hours weekday and weekend rotations as scheduled. Schedule will be determined upon the needs of the lab/team.
