Job summary

Mayo Clinic Laboratories in Rochester, MN is seeking a Laboratory Assistant to handle receipt, verification, processing and storage of biological specimens, while performing clerical and pre-analytic duties.

This part-time, supplemental/PRN position requires a high school diploma and strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently or in a team. Visa sponsorship is not available; on-site work at Mayo Clinic.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 1–2 years medical experience preferred but not required.
  • Experience with computers and office equipment is desirable.
  • Ability to read specimen labels accurately and work with numbers.
  • Must be organized and able to prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Able to work independently or in a team.

Responsibilities

  • Receive, identify, process, and store biological specimens.
  • Perform clerical and pre-analytic laboratory duties.
  • Manage supply inventory, filing, stocking, and receiving shipments.
  • Work with computer information systems daily.
  • Adhere to safety requirements for handling chemicals, reagents and infectious agents.

The laboratory assistant is responsible for biological (e.g. blood, urine) specimen receipt, identification verification, processing and storage. The laboratory assistant is also responsible for performing a variety of clerical, pre-analytic processing, and other laboratory duties that include maintaining supply inventory, filing, stocking, receiving shipments, and cleaning. The laboratory assistant works with various computer information systems on a daily basis.

This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship/we will not transfer or sponsor a visa for this position. Also, Mayo Clinic DOES NOT participate in the F1 STEM OPT extension program.

During the OnDemand interview, a question will appear on your screen, and you will have time to consider each question before responding. You will have the opportunity to re-record your answer to each question - Mayo Clinic will only see the final recording. Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Additional Qualifications
  • Knowledge of laboratory functions, medical terminology, a background in science and 1-2 years medical experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Previous experience or knowledge of computers and keyboarding, telephone operations and other office equipment desired.
  • Ability to accurately read specimen labels and work with numbers to prevent mislabeling.
  • Must be organized, able to prioritize and work in a fast paced environment.
  • Must possess good human relations skills and be able to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Must be able to accommodate scheduling adjustments, off-shifts, holiday, and weekend work assignments.
  • Requires the ability to be attentive to details and to adhere to strict safety requirements for handling chemicals, reagents and infectious agents.
