Job summary

Berkeley Lab’s Biosciences Area (BSA) has an opening for a Business Manager to join the Operations Leadership Team. The role supervises staff across travel, safety, property, procurement, timekeeping, onboarding, and executive support, coordinating with Lab Facilities, Finance, HR, and UC Berkeley partners to ensure efficient operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or related field; 8+ years in business/financial management; 4+ years in a supervisory role.
• Experience supervising staff with supervisor responsibilities and recruitment/hiring/onboarding.
• Demonstrated leadership in managing complex, evolving operations in research/academic/technical environments.
• Experience budgeting, scheduling, and program planning; excellent organizational skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication; professional, discreet interactions.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day administrative and business operations including procurement, travel, calendars, and events.
• Establish and maintain Ops Center policies and procedures in line with DOE and Berkeley Lab requirements.
• Serve as primary contact for operational, space, and resource issues; supervise staff across functions.
• Lead process improvements to enhance efficiency and customer service.
• Partner with Lab Facilities and Finance to manage space, budgets, funding, and resource allocation.
• Analyze financial issues and advise Division Directors on budgets.
