Job summary

Indiana University Environmental Health and Safety (IUEHS) is seeking a qualified professional to manage biosafety programs across IU campuses, including Indianapolis. The role focuses on audits, SOP development, and training to uphold safety and regulatory compliance.

You will audit BSL-1/2 labs, maintain audit records, advise PIs on remediation, and collaborate with the Institutional Biosafety Committee to update procedures and trainings. Travel to Bloomington may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in microbiology, infectious diseases, biology, health safety, or related field required.
  • 1 year in biological safety, molecular biology, microbiology, infectious disease control, regulatory compliance, or related experience required.
  • Valid driver's license required with eligibility for IU coverage on hire.
  • CBSP certification preferred upon date of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Perform annual audits of BSL-1/2 laboratories and report findings.
  • Maintain a database tracking laboratory audits and deficiencies.
  • Develop and document SOPs within the Biosafety program.
  • Conduct audits on regional and IU School of Medicine campuses as assigned.
  • Consult PIs and staff on remediation of deficiencies.
  • Liaise with the Institutional Biosafety Committee to initiate remediation actions.
  • Develop, review, and deliver biosafety training programs.
  • Investigate spills and accidents and support preventative measures.

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH & SAFETY (UA-ENHS-IUINA)

Indiana University Environmental Health and Safety (IUEHS) works to ensure that all Indiana University (IU) campuses are safe and healthy places to live, study, work, and visit. IUEHS develops, implements, and operates comprehensive programs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as university policies.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs annual audits of laboratories designated as Biosafety Level 1 or 2 and reports audit findings to individual staff and faculty.
  • Performs maintenance of a database that tracks laboratory audits and deficiencies identified during audits.
  • Develops and documents standard operating procedures within the Biosafety program.
  • Conducts laboratory audits on regional campuses and on IU School of Medicine campuses, as assigned.
  • Consults principal investigators (PIs) and research staff on the remediation of deficiencies.
  • Liaisons with the Institutional Biosafety Committee to initiate amendments required to remediate audit findings.
  • Develops, reviews, and delivers biosafety training programs.
  • Investigates spills and accidents and assists in the creation or remediation and preventative measures.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in microbiology, infectious diseases, biology, health safety, or a related field)
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 1 year in biological safety, molecular biology, microbiology, infectious disease or control, regulatory compliance, or related experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

  • Valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire

Preferred

  • Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) by the American Biology Safety Association (ABSA) upon date of hire

This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This role may require occasional travel to Bloomington, Indiana.
