Job summary

UCLA Environment, Health & Safety seeks a Biosafety Manager to lead comprehensive biosafety, high containment and vivarium safety programs. You will collaborate with faculty, staff and students to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and UC mandates, acting as the campus Biosafety Officer and advising the IBC.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years relevant biosafety experience, including management of BSL-3 or higher facilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership overseeing professional staff in a highly regulated environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of NIH Guidelines, Cal/OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, Cal/OSHA Aerosol Transmissible Disease Standard, and federal select agent regulations.
  • Experience working with vivarium operations and high-containment environments, managing risks associated with animal care, zoonotic diseases and infectious agents.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, administrators, managers, subordinates and academia.
  • Ability to analyze complex technical data from environmental surveys, using logic and quantitative reasoning.
  • Ability to make oral presentations and lead meetings with diverse audiences.
  • Strong writing skills for training, inspections and procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating tasks across groups to meet goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead UCLA biosafety programs and manage the unit budget and finances.
  • Serve as campus Biosafety Officer (BSO) and advise the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
  • Oversee high-containment and vivarium facilities safety operations and compliance.
  • Coordinate regulatory inspections and interactions (NIH, CDC, USDA, etc.).
  • Develop and maintain biosafety policies, SOPs, and training programs.
  • Provide personnel administration for EH&S staff and oversee supervision of a multistaff team.
  • Lead or participate in campus hazardous materials spill response efforts.
