Job summary

Triumvirate Environmental, one of the largest environmental services firms in North America, is seeking a Biosafety Consultant to join our consulting and embedded services team with a focus on biosafety.

You will scope engagements, run discovery with client stakeholders, produce written work that stands on its own, and present findings to laboratory leadership and EHS directors. The role combines analytical work with hands-on training and client interaction to improve biosafety programs.

Qualifications

  • One to five years of progressive professional experience in biosafety or a closely related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to CDC/NIH biosafety guidelines.
  • Ability to apply core biosafety concepts across diverse research and laboratory applications.
  • Knowledge of recombinant DNA technology, viral vectors, and biological hazards.
  • Experience participating in or managing Institutional Biosafety Committees (IBCs).
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Must have a reliable form of transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect laboratories, vivaria, and containment spaces against NIH Guidelines, BMBL, and institutional biosafety requirements, and document findings with corrective actions.
  • Evaluate containment practice and equipment through direct observation and conversations with bench personnel.
  • Identify exposure risks from infectious agents, recombinant and synthetic nucleic acids, viral vectors, and aerosol-generating procedures, and recommend controls.
  • Investigate exposure incidents, spills, sharps injuries, and containment near misses, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Work with principal investigators, laboratory managers, and client EHS staff on biosafety concerns, and recommend corrective actions the bench will actually adopt.
  • Independently deliver biosafety training, including new researcher orientation, bloodborne pathogens, BSL-2 practices and containment, and shipping of biological materials.
  • Prepare required documentation, including risk assessments, IBC protocol records, exposure and incident reports, biosafety cabinet certification records, and OSHA records.
  • Develop and update biosafety manuals, exposure control plans, SOPs, and related health and safety policies.
  • Scope and plan engagements: define scope, deliverables, timeline, and level of effort; flag when the ask won’t solve the underlying problem.
  • Run structured discovery with stakeholders, reconcile what people report with site observations and data.
  • Produce client-ready deliverables, including assessment reports, gap analyses, containment recommendations, and program roadmaps.
  • Present findings to client EHS leadership and laboratory management, including trade-offs behind each recommendation.
  • Manage scope, schedule, and hours against the approved plan and raise change orders if needed.
  • Quantify financial impact of recommendations: cost avoidance, containment decisions, and cost differences between fractional coverage and full-time hire.
  • Track enablement outcomes alongside compliance results.
  • Surface observations from the field and relay them to the account team.
  • Build the practice through templates, training material, and mentoring of junior staff.
