Job summary

BioPhase is seeking a hands-on Research Associate I-II for Bioprocess Development in San Diego. The role focuses on designing, executing, and analyzing cultivation and fermentation experiments across 96-well platforms, with occasional benchtop bioreactors.

You will develop media, optimize conditions, and maintain rigorous documentation. Ideal candidates have 2+ years of lab experience in bioprocessing, aseptic techniques, and strong data interpretation skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
• 2+ years of relevant laboratory experience.
• Hands-on experience with cell culture, fermentation, microbial systems, or related bioprocessing workflows.
• Experience planning, executing, and troubleshooting optimization experiments.
• Knowledge of aseptic technique, media and buffer preparation, and routine analytics.
• Strong attention to detail, organization, documentation, and reproducible lab execution.
• Ability to communicate results clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Onsite work in San Diego, Monday–Friday, in a fast-paced startup setting.

Responsibilities

• Design, execute, document, analyze, and present cultivation and fermentation experiments across multiple platforms (96-well plates, shake flasks).
• Support occasional cultivation experiments using benchtop bioreactors.
• Conduct optimization studies including media development, growth and productivity studies, and condition screening.
• Troubleshoot experiments and identify practical solutions when results are not as expected.
• Prepare, sterilize, optimize, and maintain growth media, buffers, reagents, and consumables.
• Perform routine analytics and sample handling to support cultivation experiments.
• Develop and follow SOPs for laboratory workflows.
• Maintain thorough, reproducible experimental documentation.
• Clearly communicate findings to scientists, engineers, and cross-functional collaborators.
• Help maintain lab organization, equipment readiness, inventory, and safety standards.
