Job summary

Mass General Brigham in Boston is seeking a Biomedical Technician to maintain, calibrate, repair, and inspect medical equipment in clinical and research settings. This role supports safe patient care by ensuring devices operate correctly and are properly labeled.

The successful candidate will perform preventive maintenance, respond to equipment problems, assist in installations and software revisions, and document all inspections and repairs.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in Biomedical Technology required.
  • Experience may be accepted in lieu of degree.
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical biomedical safety principles.
  • Ability to learn maintenance and troubleshooting of medical devices.
  • Ability to use computer-based tools.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect new medical devices, attach and assign control numbers and labels.
  • Perform safety testing and preventive maintenance on devices.
  • Respond to device problems; troubleshoot and resolve issues.
  • Repair devices to component level using test instruments or software.
  • Participate in evaluations, installations, and software revisions.
  • Conduct rounds in clinical areas to assess device operation.
  • Instruct staff on testing, calibration, and repair procedures.
  • Document inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.

Maintains and assists in medical equipment management by installing, calibrating, repairing, and inspecting medical equipment.

Essential Functions
  • Inspects newly acquired medical devices and systems for safety and function and attaches and assigns appropriate control numbers and labels to medical devices.
  • Conducts complete performance assurance and electrical safety testing. Performs preventive/scheduled maintenance on medical devices as required.
  • Respond to medical equipment problems in clinical or research areas; evaluate, troubleshoot, and solve problems.
  • Performs equipment repairs to a level requiring generic test instrumentation or diagnostic software, e.g., to board or component level for electrical devices.
  • Participates in medical equipment evaluations, installations, and upgrades, including software revision.
  • Makes periodic rounds of assigned clinical areas to assess the operation of medical devices and systems.
  • Instructs department and other equipment technical staff on testing, calibration, preventive maintenance, basic troubleshooting, and medical equipment repair.
  • Documents inspections, repairs, maintenance procedures, and teaching activities.

Experience

Experience as a biomedical technician. 1-2 years preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrates and understands the importance of interpersonal and communication skills to effectively work with team members, front line staff and vendors.
  • Understands electrical and mechanical biomedical safety principles.
  • Ability to learn and perform maintenance and troubleshooting of medical devices involving appropriate test equipment and software diagnostic tools.
  • Ability to learn equipment maintenance, operating procedures, and repair procedures from training materials and courses.
  • Ability to use computer-based tools.
