Summary

The Biomedical Device Integration (BMDI) Technician supports the setup, configuration, testing, and maintenance of medical devices that interface with Epic and other clinical systems. The technician plays a key role in ensuring medical device data is accurately captured, transmitted, and available to clinical staff in real-time, improving patient care and documentation accuracy.

This role works closely with biomedical engineering, health IT, nursing, and vendors to troubleshoot device integration issues and ensure proper functioning of BMDI systems throughout the healthcare environment.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the installation, configuration, and testing of biomedical devices connected to clinical systems via BMDI platforms.
  • Perform hands-on device setup, including assigning IP addresses, verifying connectivity, and ensuring devices are properly mapped in the EHR.
  • Support middleware configuration tasks (e.g., Capsule, iSirona, Cerner CareAware Connect, etc.).
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to device communication, interface connectivity, or data quality.
  • Document device configurations, interface settings, and workflows for integration projects.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to confirm proper device workflows and resolve user-reported issues.
  • Participate in go-live support for new device integrations or unit rollouts.
  • Maintain an inventory of integrated medical devices, including location, firmware, IP configurations, and integration status.
Qualifications

Education:

  • Associate degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electronics, Information Technology, or a related field required.

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a healthcare or clinical engineering setting working with medical devices or health IT systems.
  • Familiarity with networked medical devices, device integration, or clinical data systems preferred.

Skills:

  • Understanding of IP networking, HL7 messaging, and clinical device communication protocols is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and configuration guides.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for working with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Basic understanding of healthcare privacy, security, and regulatory guidelines.

Certifications (preferred but not required):

  • A+ or Network+ Certification
  • CBET (Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician)
  • Vendor-specific training (e.g., CapsuleTech, iSirona, or EHR-related certifications)
  • Assist in maintaining compliance with cybersecurity policies, HIPAA, and other regulatory standards related to medical devices.
  • Escalate technical issues to senior BMDI staff, vendors, or IT teams as needed.
  • Provide basic training to clinical and support staff on BMDI-connected devices and workflows.
Working Conditions
  • Requires work in clinical settings, patient care areas, and equipment rooms.
  • May require lifting or moving equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional after-hours or weekend work for maintenance, upgrades, or go-lives
