Mission
Fork Union Military Academy's Mission is to educate, develop, and inspire young men in a college preparatory, Christian, military structured environment. Cadets build character and learn leadership, independence, responsibility and discipline in a setting that encourages mental, physical, and spiritual growth. In this mission, our Instructors and Coaches are the heart of our programs and foster personal development with daily interaction and the ability to teach, advise, and coach our Cadets.
Description
Instructors are responsible for being specialists in academics and student development. Instructors at any level, and in any subject, shall be further willing to adhere to, enforce, encourage, and instruct per the Academy's mission and core values to all Cadets.
Essential Job Functions
Supervisory Responsibilities:
None unless deemed a department head.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Provide quality academic instruction consistent with college preparatory curriculum
- Be cognoscente of the developmental stages of adolescent age boys and set them up for success inside and outside of the classroom
- Follow the appropriate curriculum guide for each course and include appropriate planning and preparation for instruction
- Develop and maintain a well-managed classroom environment that inspires success
- Work diligently toward consistency in and out of the classroom to better support a well-rounded, positive, cadet development
- Provide timely and complete administrative reports and grades as required
- Provide timely and complete responses to requests for communication from cadets, parents, colleagues, and administrators
- Work in conjunction with Athletics and Residential Life to provide consistency in culture for cadets
- Adhere to and support Academy standards of proper appearance, decorum, and timely fulfillment of required duties.
- Educational duties include: weekly attendance at chapel, a devotional to begin each class day, serving as an advisor for a group of assigned students, barracks or activity duties as deemed necessary by the Academy
- Fulfill extracurricular and residential life duties as assigned
- Maintain professional credentials and/or proper degree requirements
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Professionally perform all duties as a role model to cadets within the appropriate scope of duties
- Be cognoscente of the developmental stages of adolescent age boys and set them up for success inside and outside of the classroom
- Be able to collaborate with colleagues and engage in an ongoing focus of professional growth and development both individually and collaboratively
- Be knowledgeable and supportive of VAIS Standards of Accreditation as they apply to instruction and applicable faculty activities.
Education and Experience:
- Must have at least a Bachelor's Degree; Master's Degree or higher preferred
- Have a major concentration of study in a content area pertaining to the primary subject matter being taught or earned 24 semester hours of credit in the content area; 12 hours for part-time instruction in another subject area. In some circumstances, alternate training or experience may qualify.
- Experience interacting with youth in a classroom setting is preferred

Physical Requirements:
- Expected hours of work are conditionally flexible per the contract issued
- Additional hours of work may be conditionally offered during seasonal events, or as directed by the Academy's needs
- Ability to climb three flights of stairs and carry at least 35 pounds
- Ability to push, pull, or lift up to 35 pounds as needed
- Ability to sit, stand, or squat as needed.
- Must successfully pass a background check and drug testing
- Prolonged periods of standing, sitting, kneeling, stooping, or working on a computer may be deemed necessary at any time
