Job summary

The State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa in Coralville, IA, seeks a Biological Threat Coordinator to lead emergency preparedness for biological threats and provide expert laboratory guidance. This on-site role collaborates across divisions and with external partners to enhance readiness and response capabilities.

Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in a scientific field and extensive lab experience; master’s is desirable.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in scientific fields such as biology, environmental science, public health or equivalent.
• Typically 5+ years of direct clinical microbiology/public health lab experience and awareness of clinical/environmental chemistry practices.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to collaborate across teams.
• Project management experience including leading teams; some training or teaching experience is necessary.
• Possession of a valid state or commercial driver’s license; ability to meet Fleet Safety Standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead SHL in developing, evaluating and documenting an emergency preparedness program for biological threats.
• Provide expert scientific/technical advice for laboratory analyses.
• Coordinate outreach and maintain relationships with clinical labs and response partners.
• Promote preparedness across divisions and collaborate with the Environmental Health Division.
