Job description

The Department of Biology at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks applications for a Lab Specialist to work in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Timko.

Position Overview

The ideal candidate will join a team of researchers working on plant functional genomics and synthetic biology. They should be self-directed, able to work independently, and possess skills in molecular biology and cell culture techniques, including gene cloning, gene transformation, and gene expression analysis (qTR-PCR, western blot, RNA seq). Basic bio/chemistry work (buffer/media prep) and bioinformatics skills are also required. Experience with plant growth and cell culture is a plus but not essential. The candidate must be able to collaborate with students, visiting scientists, and scholars.

Responsibilities

1. Order laboratory reagents and maintain stocks.
2. Schedule and record equipment and facilities maintenance.
3. Develop research plans and interpret results.
4. Write reports, maintain data records, and assist with scientific manuscript preparation.
5. Assist greenhouse staff with plant maintenance.

Minimum Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline such as biology, biochemistry, or plant science.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years of laboratory experience beyond coursework.
• Experience as a lab technician and supervisory experience.
• Skills in biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell culture.
• Ability to perform molecular biology techniques (cloning, transformation, expression analysis).
• Physical ability to work standing in a laboratory setting.
• Must be present onsite; remote work not permitted.
