Bioinformatics, US Operations - the role

As a Bioinformatics Engineer, you will work for the world leader in the industry, with a career where you will have the opportunity to collaborate and affect change while expanding your leadership skills and technical knowledge. This position is in our Bioinformatics Operations group, part of the Research and Development organization, in Advanced Diagnostics based in Marlborough, MA. The team supports genetic/genomic testing in a highly regulated CAP/CLIA laboratory environment, primarily using short and long-read sequencing as the basis of evidence. The right candidate will know how to balance innovation, standards, and quality with a practical understanding of when each is appropriate. The group supports, hones, and executes the processes defined by our Engineering and Lab Operations groups with an emphasis on compliance and continuous improvement. While closely tied to regulation through standards in validation, documentation, and data retention, the group plays an integral role in the development cycle of analysis workflows and visualization.

This position is 100% remote and requires the professional to be located in the US.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Execute and improve sequence analysis workflows and automation
  2. Track, troubleshoot, and mitigate issues in processing production samples
  3. Assist in planning and developing solutions for recurring issues to be integrated into the development branch maintained by Engineering
  4. Develop web-based results displays and dashboards for clinical geneticists, medical directors, and lab personnel
  5. Manage data from varied and complex datasets, design and implement RESTful APIs linked to systems like LIMS and AWS job runners
  6. Design, validate, test, and deploy systems and software to standardize processes across Quest Diagnostics genetic testing labs
  7. Support daily production operations and maintain documentation for compliance
  8. Collaborate with medical, quality, and compliance teams to address quality issues
  9. Create visualizations for dashboards, reports, and hypothesis testing
  10. Support LIS database management and interface testing projects
  11. Adhere to Software Development Life Cycle procedures
  12. Work collaboratively within the team and accept input from colleagues
Minimum qualifications:
  • At least 5 years of experience with programming and scripting languages
  • At least 5 years of experience working on Linux command-line for data processing
  • At least 2 years of experience with web services and API implementation
  • 3 years of experience in a distributed HPC environment
  • Knowledge of genomics, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics
  • Experience in software development and testing
  • Experience with source control in development, testing, and production environments
  • Automated testing and CI/CD experience preferred
  • Understanding of CAP documentation requirements is a plus
  • Ability to communicate technical results effectively

Education:

Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree or PhD preferred.
