Job description

Description

Are you passionate about supporting Colorado's small business and entrepreneurial community?

Colorado Enterprise Fund (CEF) is a nonprofit business lending organization dedicated to supporting the success of small businesses in Colorado. We provide access to capital for entrepreneurs who are unable to secure traditional financing. Our primary focus includes business owners who may be low-to-moderate income, minorities, women, or veterans. We are committed to creating meaningful impact in Colorado’s communities by providing equitable and affordable business financing for entrepreneurs who cannot access bank loans or other financial resources.

Why This Role Matters

At CEF, we see our community impact through job creation, wealth building for disadvantaged populations, and the growth and success of the businesses we fund. As a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), we offer loans, grants, and free business coaching to entrepreneurs to help them succeed.

Our Guiding Principles
  • Collaborative: We achieve more together than alone.
  • Continuous Improvement: We are always learning and getting better.
  • People-Centric: We put people-borrowers and colleagues at the center of everything.
  • Simplify & Remove Barriers: We make it easier for people to access what they need.
  • Open & Direct Communication: We say what we mean and mean what we say.
  • Flexibility/Agility: We adapt quickly and stay effective when things change.
  • Impact Driven: We measure success by the difference we make.
Mission-Focused Team, Real Community Impact

The team, led by the Director of Loan Administration, provides pre-underwriting packaging, closing, and loan servicing resources to support borrowers throughout the loan life cycle. The Pre-Underwriting and Closing Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring loan files move efficiently and accurately from application through closing. This position is responsible for reviewing loan documentation for completeness and accuracy prior to underwriting, coordinating with borrowers and internal teams to resolve outstanding items, and supporting the closing process to ensure a smooth, compliant, and timely transaction. This role operates with a high degree of independence, serves as a technical resource to the Lending Team, and contributes to the continuous improvement of loan servicing processes and documentation.

The Pre-Underwriting and Closing Specialist role requires strong borrower-facing communication, technical acumen, and genuine commitment to our mission.

CEF offers a hybrid work environment with a blend of in-person connection and opportunities to be remote. Employees must be Colorado-based and can expect to travel to our Denver headquarters a minimum of one day per week to maintain on-site cross-functional collaboration with peers and leaders.

At Colorado Enterprise Fund, we believe in a skills-first approach to recruitment and employment. This means focusing on what you can do and how you can grow, rather than traditional metrics alone. We are committed to adhering to anti-exclusion practices, removing barriers to access, and enhancing opportunities for all individuals based on merit and potential.

Requirements

On a given day, your work will include these essential duties:

File Review & Packaging
  • Review incoming loan applications and supporting documentation for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with Required Document List (RDL) guidelines.
  • Identify documentation gaps or discrepancies and coordinate directly with borrowers, loan officers, and third parties to resolve them in a timely manner.
  • Prepare and organize loan files for Loan Officer and Credit Team submission, ensuring all required disclosures, verifications, and supporting materials are present.
  • Verification of information provided by borrowers including researching Secretary of State records and other public records.
  • Escalate compliance concerns or file discrepancies to the Director of Loan Administration.
Pipeline Management
  • Track loan file status across the pipeline, ensuring that files continue to progress through the loan lifecycle.
  • Maintain accurate records within the internal core Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system.
  • Provide regular status updates and reporting on file progress to support pipeline visibility in collaboration with the Director of Loan Administration.
Loan Closing
  • Prepare and review closing packages for commercial, small business, SBA 7a, and commercial real estate loans, making sure every document matches the approved loan terms, conditions, and credit memorandum requirements.
  • Gather and track required collateral, insurance, and legal documents, and guide borrowers through each step with clear, friendly communication.
  • Communicate requirements and timelines clearly and patiently to borrowers, many of whom may be first-time or underserved business owners, so they can close with confidence and a clear understanding of their obligations.
  • Confirm all approval conditions met before closing, following CEF lending policies, SBA SOP, or state program requirements, and elevate any exceptions.
  • Handle post-closing follow-up, including collecting recorded and final documents, keeping loan files complete and audit-ready.
Team Contributions & Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Openly communicate and collaborate daily with Credit, Lending, and other departments to ensure smooth file handoffs and shared processes.
  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives that increase efficiency and accuracy across the pre-underwriting and closing workflow.
  • Demonstrate our guiding principles in all aspects of work, including working to identify and elevate cross-functional process friction points that slow down service delivery.
Technical Acumen
  • Proficiency in using business software applications, including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Systems to document customer consultations and interactions.
  • Navigate customer records across our internal CRM system modules and blueprint stages to allow cross-functional partners to stay updated on progress.
  • Experience working with spreadsheets (Excel), including creating formulas and formatting for readability, and supporting others in using them.
What You Bring:
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in commercial banking, banking, credit union, or community bank experience. CDFI experience is a plus!
  • Working knowledge of commercial loan documentation, collateral, closing requirements, financial statements, and SBA 7a experience.
  • Spanish fluency, spoken and written, required given the communities that CEF is serving.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with CRM systems or loan documentation/management systems
  • Associate’s degree in business, finance, or related field.
  • Financial Literacy: Advanced level understanding of business and personal financial statements and tax returns.
  • Loan Servicing Origination Systems: High-level proficiency loan servicing origination systems or similar software.
  • Cultural Emotional Intelligence: Flexibility and agility to respectfully work across a broad range of cultures, backgrounds, personalities, and working styles.
As an established CDFI, we offer the following benefits:
  • Health, vision, dental and life insurance, paid parental leave, as well as 100% employer-paid short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • CEF also offers a monthly hybrid work stipend, and a 403(b) retirement plan with employer match up to 5% of an employee’s contribution.
  • Our paid time off policies include ten (10) paid holidays per year, fifteen (15) days paid vacation to start, with an increase in year two, along with paid health and wellness time.
