Job summary

Southern Migrant Legal Services (SMLS), a TRLA project, seeks a Paralegal A for its Nashville office. The paralegal must be fluent in English and Spanish and assist attorneys with litigation preparation, outreach in rural areas, and client intakes. This is an in-person role requiring travel and strong office skills.

Applicants should have a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel extensively, including evenings and weekends, to support employment-related civil legal services.

Qualifications

• Fluent in written and spoken English and Spanish.
• Preference for a demonstrated commitment to social justice, especially workers' and immigrants’ rights.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel extensively.

Responsibilities

• Assist attorneys with litigation preparation.
• Conduct client intakes and outreach in rural areas, including evenings and weekends.
• Maintain regular communication with clients about case developments and deadlines.
• Coordinate with team members to facilitate client communication and case-related activities.
• Gather evidence, request records, and research applicable law.
• Interview clients and witnesses and draft declarations.
• Prepare forms and legal documents under attorney supervision.
• Gather and organize evidence, including medical and mental health records.
• Provide document translation and interpretation services as needed.
• Attend community meetings and conduct Know Your Rights presentations.
