Job summary

NBCUniversal Houston seeks an Assignment Desk Editor to support the Telemundo KTMD assignment desk and ensure efficient news operation across multiplatforms. The role involves coordinating interviews, tracking events, and sustaining strong editorial judgment under tight deadlines.

This on-site full-time position requires fluency in Spanish and English, newsroom software proficiency, and the ability to work long hours, weekends, and holidays as needed in a fast-paced news environment.

Qualifications

• Fluency in Spanish and English with exceptional written and verbal communication.
• Prior experience as assignment editor, assignment manager, or related role.
• Experience in the Houston market and familiarity with local communities preferred.
• Solid news judgment, strong writing and research skills.
• Experience using online and social media resources as news researching tools (LexisNexis, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp).
• Experience with newsroom computer applications.
• Basic understanding of editorial judgment and journalistic ethics, including FCC rules and libel knowledge.
• Thorough understanding of satellite operations and microwave newsgathering technologies.

Responsibilities

• Assemble the daybook on i-news listing story ideas and daily events.
• Monitor police and emergency scanners for news and disseminate information to newsroom personnel.
• Coordinate interviews and logistics for field crews.
• Facilitate news gathering across broadcast, digital, FAST channels, and web.
• Collaborate with producers, anchors, reporters and photographers daily.
• Develop enterprise story ideas with strong editorial judgment.
• Cultivate contacts important to Houston-area news coverage.
• Establish relations with Public Information Officers for updates.
• Publish online content when required.
• Plan coverage as directed by news management.
• Keep managers informed on progress of new stories.
• Edit videos for broadcast and social media.
