Job description

About the organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco’s homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

About the team: Compass Clara House is a transitional housing program for families who have experienced homelessness. The families at Clara House each have their own apartment on-site, and have access to childcare, case management, and other support to help them move towards self-sufficiency.

Salary: $29-$31 per hour

Schedule: Monday - Friday, primarily during standard business hours. Full time (7.5 hours per day).

Location: 111 Page Street, San Francisco. Fully on-site.

What the Afterschool Coordinator / Case Manager does:

This is a dual responsibility position which includes afterschool program coordination (approximately 60% of the time) and family case management (approximately 40%).

As the Afterschool Coordinator, you will manage a fun and inclusive after-school program for kids aged 5-17 years old who currently or recently lived at Compass Clara House.

Specific Afterschool Coordinator responsibilities include:

  • Create daily curriculum and activity plans for children in the program.
  • Plan and oversee trips to spots like the Exploratorium, sightseeing around SF, or just visiting a local playground. Manage all aspects of the outing, including budget, ensuring everyone’s safety, and obtaining necessary paperwork from parents.
  • Develop relationships and maintain ongoing communication with all after-school families.
  • Maintain ongoing contact with the school age children’s teachers and other providers when needed, and in collaboration with other Clara House team members.
  • Ensure that Community Care Licensing regulations are being followed.
  • Support the Clara House team with childcare when needed.

As the Case Manager, you will provide comprehensive support to residents of Compass Clara House. This may include helping families to secure permanent housing, enroll in training or education, find a job, build parenting skills, or address substance abuse and physical and mental health challenges. The Case Managers work closely with the other members of the Clara House team to ensure that all families are supported in reaching their goals.

Specific Case Management duties include:

  • Develop positive relationships with clients that foster connection, support, and trust and incorporate trauma-informed principles.
  • Provide crisis intervention, community and support services, family budget assistance, parenting support, job enhancement and support, housing assistance and support, and advocacy as appropriate to each family’s situation, including appropriate referrals to services offered both within Compass and externally.
  • Partner with families to develop short and long-range goals which include a pathway to permanent, stable housing.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client files and promptly enter case notes in Salesforce database.
  • Facilitate and provide interpretation during Housing Workshops and other community events.
  • Assist with the intake interview of prospective residents.
  • Gather permanent housing resources and collaborate with colleagues and external housing providers to update and disseminate this information.
The Afterschool Coordinator / Case Manager should have these skills:
  • Fluent Spanish required
  • Two or more years of counseling or case-management experience
  • Experience planning and leading activities for children
  • Firm understanding of child development principles and child enrichment activities
  • Extremely strong client engagement skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work
  • Commitment to supporting children and families who have experienced homelessness

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: $29 - 31 per hour, 37.5 hours per week. Non-exempt (hourly) role.
  • Paid time off: 19 days of vacation your first year, 24 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, time off for education, family leave.
  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children.
  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-6
