Qualifications

Job description

BIC QA and Compliance Advisor

Cooley is seeking a BIC QA and Compliance Advisor to join the Business Intake and Conflicts team.

Position summary: The BIC QA & Compliance Advisor is responsible for creating, evaluating, and remediating a quality control system ensuring the department adheres to the firm's risk management policies and internal BIC quality standards, often working closely with all BIC divisions, BIC leadership and firm General Counsel using critical thinking, independent judgement and demonstrating a thorough understanding of the business needs when resolving issues. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Position responsibilities:

  • Conduct audits, review process, and identify potential compliance risks while implementing corrective actions to maintain high quality standards across the department
  • In conjunction with the General Counsel and BIC leadership review, analyze and oversee client-imposed engagement letters and outside counsel guidelines to which the firm is asked to agree by clients and prospective clients
  • Upload, code, and quality control client related engagement terms into the "Terms" database
  • Advise and mentor the BIC team on the implementation and maintenance of ethical walls, providing strategic guidance through important decisions based on cumulative experience and knowledge
  • Analyze, review and draft database warnings and alerts
  • Participate in proof-of-concept testing of new technologies or solutions
  • Assist with the drafting and review of client specific waiver templates including corresponding with Responsible Partners re such templates
  • Interact regularly with partners - through email and telephone to investigate and resolve potential issues and propose solutions in connection with requests
  • Propose solutions to complex issues that will promote the efficient and ethical acceptance of new business
  • Draft conflict waivers and engagement letters, as necessary
  • Inform and advise firm attorneys and counsel of any special circumstances surrounding complicated forms
  • Assist, when needed, with all aspects of conflicts analysis
  • Awareness of current legal trends and information
  • All other duties as assigned or required

Skills and experience:

Required:

  • After orientation at Cooley LLP, exhibit proficiency in the BIC System suite, Microsoft Office suite, iManage and other firm applications
  • Ability to work extended and/or weekend hours, as required
  • 5+ years legal experience including 3+ years of specialized conflicts, intake or practicing attorney experience
  • Knowledge of American Bar Association's Model Rules of Professional Conduct and California State Bar Association's Rules of Professional Conduct
  • Overall understanding of a corporate law practice
  • Track record of performing elevated responsibilities including a demonstrated proficiency in more complex analyst duties
  • Experience conducting legal and corporate research

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's, Master's, JD or paralegal certification
  • Knowledge and experience with complete conflicts resolution

The expected annual pay range for this position with a full-time schedule is $115,000 - $155,000. Please note that final offer amount will be dependent on geographic location, applicable experience and skillset of the candidate.
