Qualifications

  • Entry-level safety role; 1–2 years of safety experience preferred but not required.
  • Manufacturing, construction, or industrial safety experience preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • OSHA 10 certification is a plus; strong communication skills required.
  • Proficient in safety documentation and recordkeeping.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine plant safety inspections of production areas and yard operations to identify hazards and regulatory gaps.
  • Assist with incident reporting and root cause investigations; help document findings.
  • Support OSHA compliance activities, maintain SDS and safety records.
  • Deliver safety trainings and toolbox talks to employees on the shop floor.
  • Maintain safety files, training records, inspection logs, and compliance documentation.
  • Manage PPE and safety equipment records and participate in safety programs.

**Summary of Primary Functions: **The Safety Technician supports the implementation and maintenance of the plant’s Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) programs. This role assists in ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, company policies, and safe work practices. The Safety Technician works closely with safety specialists, production personnel, supervisors, and management to identify hazards, prevent injuries, and promote a strong safety culture throughout the facility.This role is based at the Petersburg, VA Tindall plant and Bilingual (English/Spanish) candidates are preferred.Safety Inspections and Hazard IdentificationConduct & document routine plant safety inspections of production areas, yard operations, maintenance shops, and mobile equipment to identify unsafe conditions, unsafe behaviors, and regulatory compliance gaps. Bring awareness of findings to plant leadership.Support environmental compliance activities as assigned.Assist with mobile equipment safety monitoring (forklifts, cranes, loaders, yard trucks).Incident Reporting and InvestigationAssist in the investigation of workplace incidents, near misses, property damage, and injuries to help gather facts, conduct interviews, and document findings for root cause determination and preventive actions.Safety Compliance and Regulatory SupportAssist in maintaining compliance with applicable safety regulations, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, such as maintaining Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and safety records.Safety Training and Employee EngagementAssist with new employee safety orientation, training, and toolbox talks.Reinforce safe work practices and proper PPE usage on the production floor.Documentation and RecordkeepingAssist in maintaining safety files, training records, inspection logs, and compliance documentation.PPE and Safety Equipment ManagementInspect safety equipment such as: Fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, emergency equipment, and fall protection equipmentSupport Safety Programs and InitiativesParticipate in safety committee meetings.Required QualificationsEducationHigh School Diploma or GED requiredExperienceEntry-level position: 1-2 years of safety experience preferred but not requiredManufacturing, construction, or industrial experience preferredRequired Skills and CompetenciesBasic knowledge of workplace safety principlesStrong attention to detailGood observation skillsStrong communication skillsAbility to interact with employees at all levelsAbility to recognize hazardsBasic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, email)Ability to maintain confidentialityPhysical RequirementsAbility to walk throughout the plant and yard frequentlyAbility to work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditionsAbility to climb ladders and access elevated work areasAbility to lift up to 50 pounds occasionallyAbility to wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, high-visibility vest, steel-toe boots, hearing protection, and glovesWork Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to an office environment but will be required periodically to go out into the plant/field environment that includes noise, dirt, heat, cold, oil, fumes, and other elements.
