Job summary

The University of New Orleans is seeking a data collection specialist for the LA-VDRS program within the OPH-Bureau of Family Health. The role focuses on gathering data for the NVDRS, ensuring records are entered per CDC standards, and maintaining data collection protocols.

You will lead LA-VDRS abstraction, support part-time abstractors, and coordinate with law enforcement and coroners statewide while participating in CDC-required activities and national calls.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, or Associate’s degree plus 3 years of professional experience, or 6 years of professional work experience.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills; effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Great attention to detail and follow up.
  • Ability to manage projects, assignments, and competing priorities.
  • Proficient in the use of Zoom, Teams, and Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for Louisiana Violent Death Reporting System (LA-VDRS) data collection for the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS).
  • Ensures relevant law enforcement and coroner records data are collected and entered into the NVDRS electronic system in accordance with CDC standards for the NVDRS
  • Performs or oversees data entry.
  • Maintains current data collection protocols for the NVDRS surveillance system.
  • Serves as the data collection liaison for the Bureau of Family Health (BFH) LA-VDRS initiative with law enforcement agencies and coroner offices.
  • Serves as lead LA-VDRS abstractor and provides support to part-time LA-VDRS abstractor(s).
  • Assists the LA-VDRS Epidemiologist with case tracking and completion.
  • Conducts outreach to coroners and law enforcement agencies statewide to maintain access to records and open communication.
  • Participates in annual data closeout activities required by CDC.
  • Participates on national TA and project calls with federal funders and required meetings and site visits.
  • Participates in internal staff, project, and professional development meetings and trainings as requested or assigned.
  • Assists with special projects as necessary.
  • Supports the coordination and management of Emergency Operations during activation and as needed between events.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor’s degree, or Associate’s degree plus 3 years of professional experience, or 6 years of professional work experience.

  • Ability to manage projects, assignments, and competing priorities.

DESIRED:
  • Advanced degree.
  • Minimum 1 year professional experience performing administrative functions within an office environment or health care field.
  • Minimum 1 year professional experience in data abstraction, data entry, or similar role.
  • Minimum 1 year professional experience using data analysis software and tools.
  • Relevant industry certifications.
