The Little Compton School Department will be offering "Little Compton Learning Link: Building Strong Foundations and Creative Voices Beyond the Bell." This K-8 after-school initiative will extend learning beyond the regular school day through targeted reading and mathematics support for students in grades K-5 and creative writing enrichment for students in grades 6-8. This is a grant-funded initiative for the 26-27 school year.
The program is anticipated to operate from November 2026 through May 2027 on scheduled weekday afternoons at the Little Compton Public (Brownell) Library and the Wilbur McMahon School. Certified teachers and other qualified school staff will provide small-group instruction tailored to students’ ages, abilities, and learning needs.
Students in grades K-5 will receive targeted reading and mathematics support designed to strengthen essential academic foundations. Reading activities will address areas such as fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, phonics, and engagement with high-interest literature. Mathematics activities will reinforce number sense, computation, problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and practical applications through hands-on activities, games, and collaborative learning.
Students in grades 6-8 will participate in creative writing workshops that encourage imagination, self-expression, communication, and confidence. Students will explore genres such as short fiction, poetry, personal narrative, descriptive writing, and informational writing. They will engage in the complete writing process through brainstorming, drafting, peer collaboration, revising, editing, and publishing. Whenever possible, the program will incorporate local history, the natural environment, and community experiences as inspiration for student writing.
The creative writing strand will culminate in a student anthology, public reading, or community showcase at the library. This will give students an authentic audience for their work while celebrating student voice and strengthening connections among the school, library, families, and community.
It is estimated that approximately five (5) Teachers are needed. For the K-5 program, approximately 200 hours of instruction overall is anticipated. For the grade 6-8 program, approximately 100 hours of instruction overall is anticipated. (A coordinator will be appointed for each program to facilitate.)
