Job summary

Berkeley Preparatory School is seeking an Assistant Barracudas Swim Instructor to coach, supervise, and mentor student-athletes while supporting program culture and safety.

The role emphasizes developmentally appropriate instruction for young swimmers, adherence to USA Swimming safety protocols, and collaboration with staff to maintain a positive pool environment.

Qualifications

• Current USA Swimming membership and compliance with all applicable coach requirements.
• Completion of all USA Swimming-required coach education and safety courses with current status.
• STSC certification with in-water skills component or equivalent recognized by USA Swimming.
• CPR/AED certification through an approved provider.

The Assistant Barracudas Swim Instructor is responsible for providing instruction, coaching, supervision, and mentorship to student-athletes while supporting the culture, safety, and daily operations of the Berkeley Barracudas Swim program. The successful candidate will enjoy working with children, understand athlete development, communicate well with families and colleagues, and be willing to learn, and grow within an established coaching structure.

The coach should understand the developmental needs of young swimmers and help foster a safe, supportive, challenging, and enjoyable environment for athletes of all levels.

This role combines three related areas of responsibility: coaching and instruction for club swimmers, support for swim meets and team administration, and shared responsibility for maintaining safe, ready-to-use pool facilities. Specific assignments may vary by season.

Responsibilities include practices, meets, lessons, communications, and events connected to the program, with expectations coordinated by Barracudas program leadership.

Coaching & Instructional Responsibilities

• Plan and conduct developmentally appropriate swim practices, lessons, and training sessions.
• Provide instruction in proper stroke technique, starts, turns, breathing, body position, and other fundamental swimming skills.
• Adapt instruction and coaching to meet the individual needs, abilities, and developmental stages of swimmers.
• Provide constructive feedback and encouragement to help athletes develop confidence and improve performance.
• Maintain a safe, organized, and positive pool environment.
• Actively supervise swimmers at all times and follow all school, Barracudas, and USA Swimming safety protocols.
• Assist with swim meets, team events, practices, evaluations, and other program activities.
• Communicate effectively and professionally with athletes, families, coaches, administrators, and other members of the school community.
• Support the overall goals, philosophy, and culture of the Barracudas program.

Required Qualifications & Certifications

• Current USA Swimming membership and compliance with all applicable USA Swimming coach requirements.
• Completion of all USA Swimming-required coach education and safety courses applicable to the position, with all certifications maintained in current status.
• Current Safety Training for Swim Coaches (STSC) certification, including completion of the required in-water skills component, or an eligible equivalent certification recognized by USA Swimming.
• Current CPR/AED certification through an approved provider.
• Completion of required USA Swimming Athlete Protection Training/SafeSport requirements.
• Completion of required Concussion Protocol Training.
• Current American Red Cross certifications required by the school and/or position, including applicable lifeguarding, CPR/AED, first aid, and water-safety certifications.
• Ability to successfully complete and maintain all required in-water skills and safety competencies.
• Ability to meet all applicable USA Swimming and Barracudas program background-check and safety requirements.

All required certifications must remain current throughout employment. Additional certifications may be required based on the specific responsibilities assigned to the position.

Experience

Required

• 1–2 years of coaching experience in a competitive club or high school swimming environment.
• Demonstrated experience working with youth swimmers.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a coaching team.

Preferred

• 3–5 years of coaching experience in a competitive club or high school swimming environment.
• Experience working with early-development swimmers, including beginning and pre-competitive swimmers, is preferred.
• Previous experience teaching swim lessons.
• Experience working with swimmers across multiple developmental levels.
• Experience assisting with or managing competitive swim meets.

Administrative & Technical Responsibilities

• Depending upon the division of responsibilities within the Barracudas program, the coach may be expected to:
• Utilize SportsEngine or comparable team-management platforms for team communication, scheduling, registration, rosters, attendance, and website-related responsibilities.
• Assist with maintaining and updating team or program website content.
• Utilize Meet Manager and Team Manager software to assist with the planning, administration, and operation of swim meets.
• Demonstrate familiarity with the Colorado Timing System and electronic meet-timing procedures.
• Assist with meet entries, heat sheets, results, timing, scoring, and other meet-management responsibilities.
• Maintain accurate athlete records, attendance, training information, and other program documentation as assigned.
• Assist with administrative duties associated with practices, meets, lessons, team communications, and program operations.

Pool facilities responsibilities may include monitoring pool-deck readiness, assisting with setup and breakdown for practices and meets, checking equipment and supplies, reporting maintenance or safety concerns promptly, supporting compliance with Barracudas procedures, and helping maintain a clean, safe, and professional environment.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described below are representative of those necessary to perform the essential functions of the position:

• Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the pool deck for extended periods - especially during practices and swim meets.
• Ability to continuously monitor swimmers and maintain visual awareness of the pool and surrounding areas.
• Ability to move quickly and safely in response to an athlete requiring assistance or during an emergency.
• Ability to swim proficiently and demonstrate appropriate swimming and water-safety skills.
• Ability to enter and exit the pool safely and, when necessary, assist a swimmer in distress or participate in an appropriate water rescue consistent with training and certification.
• Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, and perform other movements necessary to supervise athletes and manage equipment.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull athletic equipment and supplies commonly used in the Barracudas program.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a pool environment where background noise may be present.
• Ability to work in wet, humid, and varying environmental conditions for extended periods.
• Ability to maintain the physical stamina, alertness, and situational awareness necessary to safely supervise student-athletes.
• Ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and assist with first aid, CPR, and water-safety procedures consistent with training and certification.

Success in this position will be measured by the coach’s ability to maintain a safe environment, build positive relationships with athletes, develop swimmers at multiple levels, work effectively with colleagues, and support all facets of the Barracudas Swim Club.

Compensation and Benefits:

The appointment will begin as soon as possible, and is a part-time, non-exempt position. The compensation will be very competitive nationally and commensurate with experience, certification attainment, and the national independent school and college markets.
