Job summary

Child Inc in Austin, TX seeks a Behavioral Specialist to support Head Start programs and early childhood services. You will work with families and staff to promote social-emotional development and classroom routines.

Description
Position Purpose

Behavioral Specialist provides classroom behavior support to ensure compliance of Head Start Performance Standards in an environment of continuous program improvement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides hands‑on support for children with behaviors that interfere with their ability to participate comfortably and appropriately in classroom routines and special events or pose a safety or health risk to themselves or others, as identified by the Special Needs Supervisor.
  • Support teaching staff in the planning and implementation of curriculum.
  • Conduct classroom observations for assigned sites, through visits.
  • Conduct individual observations of children referred for suspected behavior or Early Intervention concerns and assist in developing Behavior Intervention Plans when appropriate.
  • Utilizes parental information, observation, and teacher reports to model and coach teachers to implement approved behavior techniques within the classroom.
  • Collaborates with other agencies and professionals to coordinate the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and document progress in reports to Mental Health Manager.
  • Utilizes information from IFSP, IEPs or Behavior Intervention Plans, when applicable, to individualize support strategies for children.
  • Develop classroom management practices, support plans, and appropriate Early Intervention procedures for assigned sites, and share strategies and expectations with appropriate staff.
  • Complete additional child assessment, communicate findings and help determine next steps, when appropriate.
  • Utilizes referral information with children needing further evaluation for services and provides family support through the referral process.
  • Participate in relevant meetings.
  • Promotes children's mental wellness by providing education on Early Intervention issues.
  • Assist with onboarding and professional development of staff and parent education
General Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated understanding of infant and early childhood mental health.
  • Demonstrated understanding of differences in mental health services and concepts across cultures.
  • Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with service providers and families.
  • Partner with providers as a member of a diverse team.
  • Use results of screens and assessments to guide work with families, set goals, and develop individualized plans.
  • Refer providers and families to appropriate community services.
  • Communicate effectively with diverse groups both verbally and in writing.

The Office of Head Start (OHS), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families (ACF), provides grants to Child Inc. to provide Head Start and Early Head Start services within Travis County.
