Job summary

AccessPoint RI’s GAP program in Cranston, RI seeks a Behavioral Technician to provide direct, hands-on support in center, community, and transportation settings.

This active, 1:1 and 2:1 role supports individuals who may be minimally verbal, using AAC and visual supports, with structured routines and safety protocols. Training includes CPR/First Aid and crisis prevention/intervention.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and ability to pass required background checks.
• Valid driver's license and ability to meet agency requirements for driving company vehicles.
• Ability to complete and maintain required training within agency timelines, including CPR/First Aid, crisis prevention/intervention, Universal Precautions, and medication administration when assigned.
• Ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to stand/walk frequently, bend, assist with mobility and ADLs, respond quickly to safety concerns, work in varied weather, and lift, push, or pull up to 100 pounds as required.

Responsibilities

• Stay actively engaged with participants throughout the day; learn each person's preferences, communication style, triggers, goals, and effective supports.
• Implement individualized support and behavior plans, daily routines, visual schedules, AAC supports, sensory/regulation strategies, reinforcement, and prompting procedures consistently.
• Create clear structure, prepare participants for transitions, maintain calm boundaries, allow processing time, and follow through without escalating power struggles.
• Teach functional skills and promote independence in communication, ADLs/IADLs, personal care, meal preparation, recreation, community safety, and vocational readiness, using the least assistance needed.
• Recognize early signs of dysregulation, use proactive de-escalation, and respond safely to aggression, elopement, refusal, or other unsafe behavior according to approved plans and crisis procedures.
• Support safe community access and transportation, including vehicle entry/exit, close supervision, transitions, and driving company vehicles when assigned.
• Provide medication support as assigned and document accurately through daily notes, goal/behavior data, medication records, communication logs, and incident reports.
• Collaborate with the Program Director, coworkers, clinicians, therapists, families, and service coordinators; help prepare, reset, and organize the program environment.

Position Summary

AccessPoint RI's GAP program provides structured, person-centered adult day services for people with autism and intellectual/developmental disabilities. The Behavioral Technician delivers direct, hands-on 1:1 and 2:1 support in the center, in the community, and during transportation. Many participants are minimally or non-verbal and use AAC, visual supports, predictable routines, and sensory/regulation strategies. Some need intensive support during aggression, elopement, refusal, self-injury, or significant dysregulation. This is an active direct-support position - not a desk-based, observation-only, or therapy-only role.

What You Will Do

• Calm presence: Remain confident, firm, and highly consistent, including when participants test limits or situations become challenging.
• Relevant experience: Bring experience supporting people with profound autism and high-intensity behaviors, and build rapport with minimally verbal adults without sacrificing structure.
• Safety and judgment: Be physically capable and comfortable responding to aggression, elopement, refusal, and other unsafe behavior without becoming intimidated or rattled.
• Reliability: Arrive on time, maintain consistent attendance, and communicate schedule concerns promptly.
• Participant-first attention and initiative: Personal phone use is limited to emergencies or authorized purposes, and personal conversations do not take priority over support. Use unstructured time to engage, prepare, document, organize, or reset.
• Professional conduct: Use a respectful, adult, person-centered tone; maintain confidentiality and appropriate boundaries.
• Flexibility and follow-through: Adapt when plans change while maintaining predictable routines, expectations, and approved supports.
• Teamwork and accountability: Communicate clearly, support coworkers, accept feedback, follow plans, and ask for help appropriately.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and ability to pass required national criminal background and employment screenings.
• Valid driver's license and ability to meet agency requirements for driving company vehicles.
• Ability to complete and maintain required training within agency timelines, including CPR/First Aid, crisis prevention/intervention, Universal Precautions, and medication administration when assigned.
• Ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, to stand/walk frequently, bend, assist with mobility and ADLs, respond quickly to safety concerns, work in varied weather, and lift, push, or pull up to 100 pounds as required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two or more years of relevant experience in an adult day, residential, school, clinical, or community setting; an associate degree in a related field is preferred.
• Experience with AAC, visual supports, positive behavior supports, sensory/regulation strategies, and proactive de-escalation; RBT or comparable training is a plus.
